Error in process srrstr.dll

Hello, I have a problem with a rundll32.exe process srrstr.dll in Task Manager.  From what I have found out this has to do with creating a restore point. This process will run forever untill I stop it through Task Manager. I also have another problem that occured around the same time. My external hard drive that I use as a backup is not showing my backups since this started. I believe that a backup might have been interrupted-dont know if that could have caused all of this.

I had a screenshot but i cannot seem to paste it in here so I will type it out:

In Task Manager -> Processes

  • "Image Name" = rundll32.exe
  • "User Name" = SYSTEM
  • "Command Line" = C:\Windows\system32\rundll32.exe/d srrstr.dll,ExecuteScheduledSPPCreation
  • "Description" = Windows host process (Rundll32)

I am running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit build 7600 v6.1

  • Amd Phenom II 955 processor
  • Asus M4A785TD-V EVO mobo
  • 4gb Gskill ram
  • 2 WD Black 640gb hard drives & 1 external WD Black 750gb HD as a backup

Thanks

Answer

Hi,

Step 1:
I would suggest you to do a clean boot. A corrupt program or driver might be causing the problem and with the help of clean boot we can isolate the corrupt program and remove it.

Follow these steps:1. Click the Start orb on your Desktop
2. Type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
3. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
4. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
5. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
6. Click OK.
When you are prompted, click Restart.

If this resolves the issue, then see the following Microsoft Article on “Clean boot” and the section “How to determine what is causing the problem” to determine which program
or service maybe causing the issue.

3. Click the General tab.
4. Click Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services, and then click OK.
5. When you are prompted, click Restart to restart the computer.

Step 2:
Make sure volume shadow copy service is running and set to automatic.

Follow these steps:
1. Click on start and then type in services.msc in the search box and press enter.

1. Click on start and then type in sysdm.cpl in the search box and press enter.
2. Click on system protection.
3. Click on the drives and then click delete.

This will delete the restore points.

Make sure you start the service again by following these steps:
1. Click on start and then type in services.msc in the search box and press enter.
2. Look for the volume shadow copy service.
3. Right click on the service and click restart.

Step 3:
Run SFC scan.
System File Checker helps in initiating the Windows File Protection Service and enables you to scan all Windows protected files for their integrity and replace any problematic
files that are identified.

1. Click Start and in the start search box type CMD
2. Right click on CMD in the list and click on 'Run as Administrator'
3. Type the following command and press Enter.
 Sfc /scannow
