Error code 1618 when trying to install new software

I updated to Windows 10 last fall.  I keep receiving errors when trying to update new software.  The error tells me that I have another installation that did not complete.  Complete and retry (some wording to that effect).  My questions - 1) how do I see what is trying to install?  How do I fix the issue(s) so that I can install the new software that I can't currently finish installation.  This has also affected my updates from my antivirus.

Thank you

Hi Catrina,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

I apologize for the inconvenience caused. We are glad to help you.

I would suggest you to try the methods below and check if it helps.

Method 1: Restart the computer

Try restarting the computer and check if you are able to download the application. This will stop and end any program that was being downloaded which might be causing the issue.

Method 2: Restart Windows installer service

1. Press Windows key + R to open the run command.

2. Type services.msc and press enter.

3. Locate and right click on Windows installer and select "properties."

4. Change the startup type to automatic.

Method 3: Clean Boot

Try placing the computer in clean boot state and check if you are able to download the program.

Placing your system in Clean Boot state helps in identifying if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue. You need to follow the steps from the article mentioned below to perform a Clean Boot.

How to Perform a Clean Boot? (Applies to Windows 10)

Disclaimer: Once you are done with the troubleshooting, perform the steps in "How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with clean boot" to reset computer as usual.

Hope this helps. Do contact us for further queries. We will be happy to assist you.

Regards,

Jenith

Thank you for your help but this didn't work.  I still get the same error.

Step 1 - did this about 6 times, to no avail.

Step 2 -

Method 2: Restart Windows installer service

1. Press Windows key + R to open the run command.

2. Type services.msc and press enter.

3. Locate and right click on Windows installer and select "properties."

4. Change the startup type to automatic.

Not able to make changes as it was all greyed out (step 4).  I logged on as both administrator with my Microsoft account and as a local administrator and neither worked.

Step 3 - followed this and still could not get my software to install past this error.
