Error code: (0x80073712) occurs while trying to update my PC to another version of windows 10 or while trying to update to windows 11, I've already exhausted my meagre troubleshooting abilities.

Entering "DISM /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth" into command prompt just gives me:

C:\WINDOWS\system32>DISM /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool

Version: 10.0.19041.3636

Image Version: 10.0.19045.4291

[=== 6.8% ]

Error: 1392

The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.

The DISM log file can be found at C:\WINDOWS\Logs\DISM\dism.log

Using Restorehealth yields much the same result. I then tried sfc /scannow, but it told me Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation after reaching 11% verification.

Hi O,
I'm Sumit, here to answer your query at the Microsoft Community.

Apologies for the inconvenience. The Directories seem to be corrupted. Let us try to correct that. Slight chance is that it might not work, but we will try our best.

Thanks Sumit,

The first half of the method worked, upon restarting, windows checked the disk. Unfortunately, after filtering the applications event viewer by chkdsk and Wininit, the log is empty.

Was there a prompt to schedule disk check at next reboot?

Please open the Windows Recovery environment using either of the steps below:

On the Lock Screen, Press and hold the Shift key. Then, click the restart button on the lock screen located at the bottom right situated in the Power menu, to open the Windows Recovery options.

If you cannot reach the Lock screen or start your computer, restart your PC two times when the boot screen is shown. If your PC has no restart button, press and hold the Power button until the computer shuts down. Do this twice.

On the third time, windows should open Windows Recovery options automatically.

Select Command Prompt.

Run this command:

chkdsk D: /f

You know thinking back I don't think there was a prompt. I restarted and when windows told me it was checking the disk I thought it all was good. My bad. Either way, I've attached the images you requested, the quality isn't great though :(

Please run Chkdsk on the OS volume.

To find the OS partition's drive letter, run:

  • bcdedit | find "osdevice"

Note the drive letter shown in the output.

Run chkdsk /r on that volume.

If that doesn't help, please share all the logs from the following folder:

c:\windows\logs\cbs

Share them on OneDrive and post the link here.
