Error 643 when installing Security Update for Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 (KB2455033)

I keep getting error code 643 when installing Security Update for Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 (KB2455033).  I'm using Windows 7 Professional 64 bit SP1.  My computer is a white box, Intel core i5 with 4 GB memory.  Visual Studio 2008 and Visual Studio 2010 Professional are installed as is XNA 3.1.  Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1, Compact Framework 2.0 SP2, Compact Framework 3.5,framework 4 Client Profile, Framework 4 Extended and Framework 4 Multi-Targeting pack are installed.

This is listed as an important security update through Windows Update.  I've tried the Microsoft cleaner and it confirmed there was an error, but that didn't resolve the problem.  Anyone have suggestions?  Thanks in advance

Thank you so much for your help and support.  I've tried to provide answers to your questions and provide more information.

I did try the troubleshooting steps, but was unable to successfully install the patch.  The cleanup tool that I used was: MicrosoftFixit50123.msi.  It found the partial install and removed it.  However I'm still not able to install the patch.

This is the error list I get when I try to do the install from the download center:

I have the exact same problem the update fails. I also have Windows 7 64bit. Did you manage to resolve the problem?

The fail is as yours:

I ran across the same issue.  For those who may run across this thread as a result of a google search, you may find the following blog helpful: http://chandrakumar.in/technical/55-technical/30-visual-c-team-blog-.html.  Scroll down a little ways to the "Visual Studio 2010 RTM with Windows SDK" entry.  In short, quoting from the blog:

If you have Visual Studio 2010 RTM and Windows SDK 7.1 installed on an x64 machine, then the Visual Studio 2010 update (KB2455033) fails to install on your machine.

The workaround for this issue:

  1. Go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the package “Microsoft Visual C++ compilers 2010 Standard – enu – x64
  2. Try installing KB2455033 again

Oddly, I am running into the same error, but my program list shows that I have Microsoft Visual C++ 2912 already loaded. I am not sure why Windows Updates are trying to download an update for the 2010 version. Anyone have any ideas?
