Problem Description

Until yesterday the Epson R3000 printer, connected via USB to my workstation, was working fine. The last time I used the printer was 06/28/2021. I know this since I print printer calibration charts on a weekly basis.

Starting yesterday, when I printed the test chart:

  1. the print job went to the print queue,

  2. the job was sent to the printer

  3. the printer status light blinked, the printer whirred but nothing was printed.

Diagnostics Undertaken

From the print queue, I accessed the Printer Preferences and using the Epson Stylus R3000 dialog, I confirmed that the computer could communicate with the printer by initiating a nozzle check. Which completed as expected.

To verify that the printer was functioning correctly, I connected to Windows 10 laptop and was able to printer photographs without any issues. I was able to access the Epson specific printer preferences, Media, paper settings, etc.

Knowing that the printer was functioning correctly on the laptop, I went back to the workstation and removed the printer and uninstalled all of the related Epson programs via the Apps section of the Setting application.

I then downloaded the latest Drivers and Utilities from Epson (https://ftp.epson.com/drivers/epson14023.exe). On the surface, everything seems to work, but the driver installed is the generic Epson ESC/P-R V4 Class Driver and not the R3000 specific driver.

After some research led me to look into the file C:\Windows\INF\setupapi.dev.log where I found the following:

I known there is a great deal of text that follows, but I want to show the chain of event the lead up to the error. To find the error you can search for:

Error 1459: This operation requires an interactive window station.

To further diagnose the problem, I followed the recommendations from this post.

Specifically,

  1. I disabled the Windows Firewall

  2. Configured for a Clean Boot, per the post, and rebooted.

  3. Ran the sfc /scannow scan which reported no errors.

At the moment, I've exhausted what I can do short of reinstalling Windows. Not ready to go there yet.

Hello EricBorduas2,

I'm John an Independent Advisor and a Windows user like you. I'll be happy to assist you today.

Microsoft recently released KB5004945 to address the PrintNightmare bug but unfortunately, it caused printing issues for some users. They deployed a server-side fix to remotely address printing failures. Kindly note that you won’t see a new update or notification on the Windows Update screen and the update happens silently in the background. This will take up to 24 hours for a complete rollout on both consumer and non-managed devices

You can check the link below for more details.
https://www.windowslatest.com/2021/07/09/window...

Since your current version of Windows is 10.0.18363, you'll find KB5004946 instead under Control Panel > Programs and Features> View installed updates

Kindly let me know if this helps or if you have any further concerns.

Kind regards,

John DeV
