Error 0x80073712 installing Win7 SP1

Hi, I'm looking for any advice about how to deal with this issue.

I run Windows Update to install SP1 and it fails with 0x80073712.  I also get this error when I run the downloaded SP1 package.

I followed the recommended steps from  System File Checker shows no errors in the CBS.log (but 20,000+ lines of info, so it's possible I missed something).  System Update Readiness tool ( installs ok.  It had initially been failing, but after running SFC twice, SUR now works ok.

I've tried restoring from a system restore point, but the only ones that are available are from immediately before I tried installing the service pack, and they don't help.

I'm running Windows 7 Professional on a MacBook Pro.  The only AV software I run is Microsoft Security Essentials.  No other anti-spyware/anti-malware.  I am willing to run any kind of non-destructive repair, but I will not run anything which will then require me to reinstall all of my apps.  Life's just too short.
