Duplicate Identical folders under C:\users and Desktop

I have Win 7 and a folder called cdunn under c:\users.  There is also a folder named cdunn under the desktop.  If I create a folder or file in c:\users\cdunn, it also shows up in the cdunn folder under Desktop.  If I delete the folder or files in Desktop cdunn, it also deletes the files under C:\users\cdunn.  Why is this and how do I get rid of the folder on the Desktop without deleting my files under c:\users\cdunn????

You can remove the user folder from the Desktop to avoid any confusion - if you wish to do so.

Go to Control Panel\Personalization\Change desktop icons & clear the User's files checkbox.

It is the same location, just a different way to get to it.

It occurs because the desktop has or can have a system shortcut to your user folder.
