Hi Pat,
As the printer is not compatible with Windows 8.1, please install the driver in Windows 7 compatibility mode.

Download the driver from the Dell website and install it in Windows 7 or Windows 8 Compatibility Mode. Refer to the following steps.
a. Right-click on the setup file and select Properties.
b. Click the compatibility tab, tick the box next to Run this program in compatibility mode for and select Windows.
