Download location for offline maps

I suspect my network proxy is blocking download of map content.  When I switch over to my mobile hotspot, maps starts working but from my wireless network, maps does not work and will not download any offline maps.  Is there an address I can add an exception to in my proxy?

Thanks

Hello,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

I understand that you get issues downloading maps while connected to a wireless network. However, I would appreciate if you could helps us narrow down the issue.

  a. Do you get any error message related to proxy settings?

  b. Do you have any application for modifying proxy settings (e.g. Hotspot Shield etc.)?

The issue might arise if the proxy server is not configured to take automatic settings and is governed by some third party proxy software. In order to troubleshoot the issue, I would suggest you to try the following methods and check if the issue persists.

Method 1:

If you are using a proxy connection, then try disabling proxy and then check if the issue persists.

Follow the steps to disable proxy:

  1. Open Internet Explorer
  2. Click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options
  3. Click the Connections tab, and then click LAN settings
  4. Uncheck the Use Proxy server.
  5. Click Apply and Ok to save changes.

If the issue still exists, try the next method.

Method 2:

Add the websites to the trusted sites for Internet Explorer and modify the security for this zone to Low.

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. Click the Tools button , and then click Internet options.
  3. Click the Security tab and click on Trusted sites.
  4. Scroll down the bar for the security level to Low.
  5. Uncheck the Enable Protected Mode.
  6. Click on Sites.
  7. Type in the website name (e.g., http://www.outlook.com) in the space provided and click Add.
  8. Click on Close and then click OK.

Try reloading the websites and check if the issue persists.

Hope this information is helpful. Do let us know if you need any further assistance, we will be glad to assist you.

I have tested the maps download on networks other than my wifi and the downloads work as expected.  I want to correct the issue using Method 2 described above but I need to know what sites need to be added to the "safe list" to allow for the download.

Hello,

Thank you for the update.

In case you wish to use Method 2 to correct your problem, you would need to enter the exact URL (address of the portal) of the website from where you are downloading the maps. Check if the steps help.

Post back your results for further assistance.

I don't know the location of Microsoft map updates. That is the crux of my question. From where are the maps downloaded?

Hello,

Thank you for the update.

Windows 10 Maps use an Offline cache. If the cache (locally downloaded and stored files) is empty in case it is corrupted, Maps might not work.

It may, however, take a minute or more for a download to fetch the map data in case of a new cache.

I would suggest you to go to: Settings > System > Offline Maps to select your region, download the maps, set update options, etc. Check if it helps.

Please post back your results for further assistance.

I am sorry if I am not explaining myself correctly but I cannot download any Microsoft maps.  I need to know from where maps are downloaded so I can create an exception in my firewall.

I seem to have the same issue as kcmtbiker - looks like our proxy server is blocking "Road" map content ("Aerial" map content seems to be working fine). When switching to a direct connection Maps work fine on both "Road" and "Aerial" settings.

I would also like to know where Maps is looking for its data - the URL or perhaps a specific TCP port?

Hi -- did you ever get an answer to the offline maps download issue you were experiencing from the wireless network?  Did Microsoft ever provide IP's or list of URL's -- we can't download from our corporate network yet cannot figure out what is being blocked.
