Does Windows 10 Version 1803 Break Wake on Lan?

Hello,

I updated to Version 1803 on June 2.  After the update, Wake On Lan would no longer work.  It worked before the update.  I have done the following:

  • Checked for update to BIOS, and installed update to A21 for my Dell Optiplex 790
  • Ensured that Wake on Lan was enabled in BIOS and Deep Sleep was disabled
  • Checked for updated driver for Intel 82579LM NIC.  No update is available
  • Checked Power Management tab for Intel 82579LM NIC
    • Cleared all "Power Saver Options"
    • Checked "Wake on Magic Packet"
    • Cleared all other "Wake on Lan" Options
  • Cleared "Turn on Fast Startup" in Power Button Settings

After doing all the above, I rebooted.  Wake on LAN does not work.

Any help would be appreciated.

The 790 is not even certified tested for the April Update:

I personally would go back to the previous version.

Yes, not the best news you want to hear. These feature updates are not thoroughly engineered and are rushed mostly to meet deadlines. They have become highly unnecessary in some instances. My opinion, focus on the apps and less on having the latest version of Windows. If your apps are working fine and you are getting your work done, minimize your need to jump on the latest release.

Thank you for the quick reply.

Since no one has challenged your assertion, and my experience, that 1803 broke WOL, it sounds like the only choice for me is to rollback, so that's what I'll do.

This happened to me on the last major Windows 10 update, and after digging around for a couple days, I discovered that the fix was to flash the BIOS.  I did and WOL functionality was restored.  This time, I haven't seen other reports of this problem for 1803, so by posting here I was hoping to hear from someone else who experienced the problem and perhaps someone who was able to fix it.  I worry about getting off the update path for Windows 10 lest I end up at a point where really important things stop working and fixing things becomes very complicated.

I'm new to this forum, and I chose to report this as a question instead of a bug.  Should I report it as a bug, too, so maybe someone will put it on a list of things to fix, or will it end up on such a list by virtue of being here.

Thanks again for your help.

You can file a bug report, but ultimately, support is determined by the OEM, not Microsoft. So, Dell would be who you make a report to. But you can use the feedback hub:

On the power management tab you need to you need to enable 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power'. That will enable the options 'Allow this device to wake the computer' and 'Only allow a magic packet to wake the computer'.

Hello,

The Power Management tab for my NIC looks like this:

Image

I've cleared all the "Power Saver Options" and selected the "Wake on Magic Packet" option under "Wake on LAN Settings".  Other options available under "Power Saver Options" include "Reduce link speed during system idle and Reduce link speed to save power.  I've cleared both of these.

Other options available under "Wake on LAN" include "Wake on LAN from power off state.  I've not selected that one.

The options you suggest are not available.  My Power Management tab changed to this format when I updated the driver for the card the last time Windows Updated broke WOL.

Any other suggestions are welcome.  I'd really like to get this working instead of rolling back.

Thank you.

Look for PME and enable it. IIRC. it's on the advanced tab.

On some motherboards, there can be a PME setting in BIOS.

What is PME?  I can't find it on the advanced tab, which looks, to me, like this:

Other "Settings" include:  Locally Administered Address; Log Link State Event; Maximum Number of RSS Queues; Offloading Options; Receive Side Scaling; and Wait for Link.

If I need to, I'll check the BIOS.

Thanks again.

Although I agree with Andre, MS will probably blame the OEM for the problem, it would not hurt to report it to MS also. There is a chance that something MS "improved" is the cause of the problem (that is my guess). MS can add it to the "encylopedia galactica" of problems blamed on 1803 ...

Deep Sleep should definitely be off, so that's OK.

WOL settings should be on, so that's OK.

WOL is closely linked to power saving, so I would turn all the power saving settings on.

Shutdown and then try WOL.

Sorry but I can't think of anything else - and it is possible that Intel/Microsoft broke something.

What is PME?  I can't find it on the advanced tab, which looks, to me, like this:

PME is Power Management Event. It can also be called something like allow PCI to control power state.
