Does anyone know what a "CIFS" Login / Password is? Where is this information located in Windows (7)?

I am trying to find out what a CIFS Login & Password is, what it is, and where this info resides on my system. I need this information in order to access my system form a device on my home network. I have read through various related posts, both on this forum and others, there seems to be a variety of opinion regarding CIFS and how to deal with it. Personally, all I want to know is where this CIFS information resides, do I have to generate a CIFS Login / Password, if so, how?

Thanks in Advance!

Hi,

Common Internet File System (CIFS), a protocol that defines a standard for remote file access using millions of computers at a time. With CIFS, users with different platforms and computers can share files without having to install new software.

You can refer to the article provided below and check if it helps:

Hope this helps,

...Thanks for your reply John!

Although, as per my question (above), I need to know what my system's CIFS login / password is so that I can access my system on my network. So without sounding too redundant, where can I find this CIFS information since I do not remember specifically creating it?? Or, if I have to create it, how do I do so??

Once again, Thank You for your help!

Hello Debbie,

Thank you for responding! Regarding your question(s), my home network consists of 1 PC (Windows 7, 64bit OS), 1 Router (Netgear wireless, model WNDR37AVv1), and 2 LG LG Blu-ray Players ( model BD670 WiFi Built-in). The ‘network’ is working just fine except when I try to access my PC from the LG units. As I’ve stated before, the PC is listed as a network connected device, however, when I select it, the ‘CIFS Signin’ screen appears.

Now, since I first encountered this CIFS Wall (if you will), I’ve tried entering my PC login / PSWD, didn’t like that. As suggested on one of the forums, I’ve created a guest user ID & PSWD on my PC and tried logging into CIFS using the guest ID / PSWD, didn’t like that either. There were some other suggestions regarding ‘Windows Live Essentials 2011’ & ‘Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant 6.5’, some said to install these apps, others suggested removing them, personally, I did neither.

I hope this helps you, if you need any further info, let me know…. Thanks Again!

Hi DJWIN7,

Further information I've found looks like its your Netgear that's setting the CIFS username and password.  I would suggest contacting them directly for assistance or whomever your ISP provider is if they setup your home network:

Hope this helps!

Hello Debbie,

Your gonna love this, Netgear responded to my ticket regarding the CIFS issue. To sum up their solution, they suggest to contact LG, who washed their hands of the problem by placing the blame on Windows OS, who so far has directed me back to Netgear. I just can’t believe that there isn’t someone out there that can help solve this problem!

Debbie …fyi,

Looks like this CIFS protocol is Microsoft related which would lead me to believe that the answer to my sign in problem resides in Windows. See Link:

Hi DJWIN7,

If you wouldn't mind, I'd like to get a bit more information from you to best assist with this issue.

Can you please give a step by step on how exactly you are accessing the LG and from where?

Also, is it possible to give us a screenshot of the exact CIFS prompt you are getting?

If a screenshot is not available, please let us know the complete detail of the CIFS box and the text in it when received?

Thank you for your time!
