Many years ago, many websites required it. I uninstalled JAVA from my computer a few years ago and I have not come across an application or website prompting me to install it. This is both on my PC and Mac.
Some major applications I believe might still require it, such as Adobe Creative Suite.
Adobe CS has no reliance on Java on Windows. I think the reliance on Java was even removed from the Mac version too.

I recently installed Adobe CS 6 on my Mac and Illustrator required it to function properly on El Capitan.
