Display went rainbow colored haywire after fall update?!

had been putting off the update and after I finally installed, it totally screwed up my display. I updated video card drivers and tried to uninstall the update but im torally screwed. Please help!
Hi Jay. I'm Greg, a volunteer installation specialist and 8 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

If necessary use Safe Mode to perform these steps: https://www.digitalcitizen.life/4-ways-boot-saf...

Check for a newer Display driver on the PC or Display adapter Support Downloads webpage. While there check if there are other newer drivers to Update. You can take your time until they are all updated.

There is a known issue of incorrect Display driver being pushed by Windows Update which requires rolling back the driver. Right click Start to open Device Manager, choose Display device, then Driver tab, then Roll back.

If there is no Roll Back or that doesn't help choose Update Driver on Display device Driver tab, then Browse Computer, then Let Me Pick to see a list of all previously installed Display drivers, work backwards trying each to find one that works.

If necessary you can also go to Settings>Update & Security>Windows Update to look for the driver under Installed Updates and Uninstall it form link there. Then you can hide the driver so it isn't pushed again using the Hide Updates tool downloaded from here: http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/2/2/f2...

If none of those work try to System Restore to a point before the problem began: http://home.bt.com/tech-gadgets/computing/how-t.... Make sure System Restore is always enabled for C with plenty of disk space apportioned (5-10%) in its Configuration settings.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Hello,
Please see the below options:
Option 1.Try Rolling back if you have an option:
Go to Device Manager by typing in Devmgmt.msc in Run dialog box.
Navigate to Display devices and right click ATI Radeon HD or Similar device you have. Choose Properties.
On the Driver tab, hit rollback Driver to go back to the previous version.
Option 2. Remove drivers completely and Install the the newest ones available from the OEM or the maker.
What you need to do:
1. Uninstall everything of Display driver using DDU
http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-dri...
2. Reboot.
3. Make sure your device manager shows Microsoft Basic Display adapter.
4. Download the driver from the OEM or the maker like AMD
5.Run the Setup and you should be good to go.

Greg.

Thank you SO much. I booted to safe mode, rolled back with no luck. Went to update driver and did as instructed. There were 3 updates in 2017, 12/15, 10/27, and 10/6 and I still had the issue. Once I installed 8/1/2016 drivers, the display was normal. Anything I should do moving forward to prevent this happening?

Glad it helped, Jay.

What apparently happened there is that Windows Update pushed the wrong Display driver, so what you can do in the future if this happens is Update or roll back the driver affected. It is also always a good idea to keep System Restore turned on so that it can be a line of defense against buggy Windows Updates, and if you want to back up your entire install keep a System Image backup externally using a good, flexible imagine app like Macrium: https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/7363/macrium-re...
