DISM.exe 'The source files could not be found'

Hi,

I am trying to run DISM to fix some issues with a couple of DLL files, but I get the message 'source files could not be found'

I have tried to run also the sequence

dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup

sfc /scannow

dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

sfc /scannow

But doing that dism froze when restoring health...

Any advice? Everything started because sometimes when I boot up my Intel Wireless adapter does not switch on and I have to restart the computer, but that restart takes about 5 minutes instead of the usual 15 seconds...

Thanks

First you should be really careful when using .../startcomponentcleanup as you will be unable to remove updates and other un-intended consequences,

Regarding sources error.  To fix the "dll" files you will need to mount an image of win 10 (the same build you are running) and point to where the ISO is mounted. (see this wiki)

Now to your actual problem

Hi,

Thank you for your prompt reply. The event viewer log is here:

Meanwhile I am downloading Windows's ISO... With the ISO downloaded, should I run StartComponentCleanup first or directly use RestoreHealth pointing to the ISO?

Best,

Jaime

Also, when I point to the image, I get the error message:

Unable to access the image

I have checked that the path is correct and the file seems to have read permissions...it must be a stupid thing but any idea what is causing this?

1-What command generated that error?

2-Where is the Image mounted (internal, external, etc) If external how is the source drive formatted (Ntfs, fat32, etc)

Hi

The command was

dism.exe /Image:C:\Users\Documents\ISO /Cleanup-image /RestoreHealth

The ISO folder is a folder which has only one file, Windows's ISO

The file is stored internally, NTFS

Thanks,

This is the correct format

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /source:WIM:X:\Sources\Install.wim:1 /LimitAccess  Where "X" is the drive letter where the ISO is located.  Simply change the "X" to the correct drive letter

Hi

I get again 'source files could not be found' when I run that command.

The folder C:\Sources does not exist on my computer

Also, I am confused by the file formats: I downloaded a .iso from Microsoft's website, but DISM requires a .wim?

It seems there is an intermediate step missing...

Thanks a lot for your help,

Jaime

Mount the ISO first. I assume you're running Win 8 or Win 10. Right click the iso and choose "mount". Go to your computer screen and you'll see there's a new drive letter for your Windows disk, use that drive letter in your command.

One thing of note is that the mounted ISO has to be the same build that you are running on the computer so if you are running the release version the ISO needs also to be build 10240
