DISM and Online check

Hello,

What does 'Online' in the below instruction?

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

Does this mean that we should be connected to the internet?

Thanks

Hi IrBlueSky,
I am Sumit, an Independent Advisor and a 2-Year Windows Insider MVP here to help.

Online in the DISM context means an OS which is currently running from which the command is invoked, not related to the Internet.

For example if you are running DISM from a Windows Installation Media, you would not write Online, Instead, you would give the path of the OS like the following:

DISM /Image:C:\Windows /cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

Hope that helps.

Okay, I'll try once more :)

Every Windows Installation is called Image in context of DISM. Lets assume you have two Windows Installations in your computer, one on C drive and one on D.
If you are running Windows Installation from C and specify Online switch, DISM would execute commands on the Windows installed on C.

If you are running Windows Installation from C, you can specify the Image path to Windows Installation present at D to service it.

DISM /Image:D\Windows /cleanup-Image
(In this case cleanup Image would be run on D as Image of D is specified)

When you run DISM.exe command, you must either specify the /Online or /Image switch. If you specify the /Online switch, DISM.exe will not expect a path to an offline image. Rather, the command tool will target the running operating system.
