Disk Cleanup [seemingly] Not Working in Windows 10

Upon attempting Disk Cleanup, the progress bar goes as expected (after tapping a Delete Files button) (either in the main screen or the clean system files screen). But, upon completion, the Disk Cleanup dialog goes away with no confirmation information and the space is not freed.

Hi,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

I understand your concern and will assist you to resolve this issue.

1. Have you try to launch the program from 'Administrative tools' in control panel?

2. Do you have any third party software such as registry cleanup or CCleaner in your system?

Method 1: I suggest you to perform System File Checker (SFC) scan.

System File Checker is a utility in Windows that allows users to scan for corruptions in Windows system files and restore corrupted files.

To perform SFC Scan, refer to the below link:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929833

Method 2: I would suggest you to launch disk cleanup by right clicking on it and select 'Run as administrator' and check if it helps.

Method 3: If the issue still persists, you may boot the computer to safe mode and check if it is working or not.

Refer the link below to login to safe mode.

Hope this helps. If the issue remains unresolved, please get back to us and we would be happy to helps.

So far, the behavior persists, even after applying the 3 methods that you mentioned. Those were nice tries though. the space has restored; but, I never received any notifications. I noticed it when looking in the file explorer.

Hi,

Thank you for your reply.

Which account are you using? Is it Administrator account or standard account?

I suggest you to login with Admin Account and create a new user account and check.

Refer the link below to add an account to the PC.

  1. I am not using the Administrator account that is preset by Windows. I have only 1 user account, so it is an administrator account.
  2. The space has restored, although the restoration seemed sudden.

I also ran all the tips to make Disk Cleanup actually clean up everything and it still leaves the same files each an every time I run it. In my case it is Windows Defender and Temporary files all other files are erased/deleted. When moving %temp% to Recycle Bin an erasing/deleting it for some reason it INCREASES the amount of temporary files the next time I run Disk Cleanup. And yes I'm running everything as Admin and have even tried Admin in Safe Mode all to no effect.

I am trying to upgrade Windows10.  I need to free up disc space in order to upgrade.  The Disc Cleanup appears to start and the progress bar stops moving.
