Disable Startup Repair on Windows 7

Hi,

We were asked to "Disabled Startup Repair" on all Windows7 computers.

OS version: Windows 7 Enterprise SP1

A little confused on which options this is refer to for Windows 7.

Every time we unplug/plug a physical computer (or Power off/on a VM) - it will show the "Windows Error Recovery" screen:

then Press F7 - will bring us to the "Windows Boot Manager" screen:

then Press F8 to go to "Advanced Boot Options" screen:

In here there is this "Repair Your Computer" option.

Question:

- Does this "Repair Your Computer" option referring to the "Startup Repair" option?

- How can we get to this "Launch Startup Repair (recommended)" on Windows 7? (or this screen does not exist in Windows 7)?

Thank you for any help.

Hi Jayant,

Thanks for your reply.

We are not getting any errors. We were simply asked to remove of the Repair option from the MOE and Windows start-up based on a security finding, which we must comply.

When a Windows 7 computer has it power cable plug off then on / when VM Power Off/On, it will get this:

by pressing F2 it went to:

then press F8 - to go Repair your computer:

This is the Disable the Repair option to be removed from Windows 7 Startup, So it will always Start Windows Normally.

Can this be accomplish by SCCM? is there ref article I can use?

Thank you

Cheers

Hello,

Thank you for keeping us posted.

I would suggest you to try the following steps and check if that helps to disable “Startup Repair” on the system.

At the Command prompt enter the following:

bcdedit /set {default} recoveryenabled No

This will disable Startup Repair from automatically booting when there is a problem.

However, you'll have to get back into Windows as and Admin to re-enable it. Just change the No to Yes.

I hope this information is helpful.

If issue persists, you can write to us and we will be glad to assist you further.

Thank you.

Hi,

Tried running this cmdlet alone

bcdebit /set {default} recoveryenabled No

it did not work. But if we run both cmdlets

bcdebit /set {default} recoveryenabled No

bcdebit \set {decault} bootstatuspolicy IgnoreAllFailures

then the it skipped the Startup repair from auto booting.

question:

1. Thought that bootstatuspolicy is set to IgnoreAllFailure by default? why need to ran "...bootstatuspolicy ignoreallfailure"?

2. In windows > In Computer > Properties > System Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery, there is this option "time to display recovery options when needed".

From understading, by selecting this option and set to 0 - this will stop startup repair screen from showing too. correct?

If we have this option is selected for future MOE deployment , and then also push the above cmdlets via gpo. will there be any issues of doing so?

or, the above cmdlets has nothing to do with the "time to display recovery options when needed" option?

thanks

Cheers
