Disable Split Screen on Windows 10

Suddenly I'm frequently getting split screen on the most recent version of Windows 10 after someone else utilized my computer. For me, it's distracting.

Also there is no longer a blank desktop page with my background picture where I can easily drop and find files.

Any advice on how to change these would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Jeffrey,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft community. I understand the inconvenience caused to you and will assist you in solving the issue.

I suggest you to follow the steps provided below and check if it helps.

  • Navigate to Start>>Settings>>System.
  • In the left navigation pane, click on Multitasking.
  • In the right pane, under Snap, change the value to Off

I would like to inform that in Windows 10 we have the option to create multiple Desktops and personalize each desktop. To switch between desktops, click on the Task View icon next to the Search box in the Taskbar and check if your desktop is available in the list.

Hope the information is helpful. Feel free to write to us for any other assistance with Windows, we'll be glad to assist you.

Thank you!

I was very frustrated when the latest Windows update automatically toggled "snap" on. I am a Windows fan, but that move was not a welcome one.

I have tried your solution to disable a split screen display that has suddenly appeared on Windows 10 O.S. by going to <settings<system<Multi-tasking and turning off the Snap option on the right hand tile of the menu dialogue box and the 2 split screens displayed horizontally still remain active.

However if the screen magnifier application dialogue box is opened and the <views drop down list opened, by enabling between the <Full screen, <Lens and <Docked options sequentially and back to <Full screen the 2 split screens displayed horizontally reverts back to the single, Full screen mode.

No.  I want windows to revert to previous behavior where the windows toggle between full screen and resize mode.  I need to use 3 windows on a laptop.  With only 2 areas available with split screen, it's awful.  Is there a way to just let it revert to previous window behavior.  Just turning snap off doesn't allow me to resize windows.

Another "upgrade" that's just the opposite.

no! Beneath "arrange windows automatically by dragging them to the sides or corners of the screen" there is a small switch, click it, it will change from 'on' to 'off'

the options beneath that will become greyed.

In June, I began having problems with my laptop display having 3 separate split panels that shows the left side of the screen on the right and the right side on the left. It began after a Windows 10 update. I have taken it to my computer tech twice, and each time he returns it telling me it is working fine. He has charged a total of $140 and it continues to malfunction. In the past week, I have been able to power it up and get a normal screen several times, but now it is stuck on a 3

pane display. I have repeatedly restarted it  & shut it down to no avail.

David B suggested toggling between the magnifier views. When I attempted to make the changes using the magnifier setting I discovered the viewer tab that should pop up when I toggle on the magnifier doesn't appear. When I turn on the magnifier, it defaults to the magnifier setting that magnifies the cursor window when I move the cursor around my display. From my read online about the magnifier app, it should default to the entire screen being magnified. So I'm wondering if my problem with the 3 split panes has something to do with the missing viewer drop down that should have appeared when I turned on the magnifier.

I regret upgrading Windows 10. I've had nothing but problems since the upgrade. I'm considering going to an Apple product.

I fixed this problem by simply going to the notification box on the far right of the bottom taskbar, then clicked on "tablet mode" at the bottom of that panel, then turned tablet mode "off".  This corrected the problem of having 4 split screens on the desktop.  Maybe this will work for others too.

I have tried all the suggestions related in this post about split screens. All updates   are current, but I still have a split screen with the sides reversed. This happens automatically while a video is playing. I have shut off Snap, and several technicians have worked on my Acer Aspire laptop with no results. They have also uninstalled and reinstalled...no results. This has happened during the last two months after driver updates. What now?
