Device is listed twice in Microsoft Account Devices with different details (same SN)

After reinstalling Windows 11, I now see two devices in my Microsoft Account with different PC names and the same serial number. The details show different Windows versions and only the older one allows location. How can I merge these so I only show one device?

Hello,

The word "Device" can be deceiving, when in fact, it is for each install.

When you reinstall Windows, even on the same device, it would be listed as a new "device" with the new installation's PC name.

On the reinstall, you need to enable location service via Settings.

To remove the old "device", you should use the "remove device" option at the bottomn fo the device listing to remove it. Now, if you use digital retail license, and the new install doesn't have Windows activated yet, don't just remove the old device until you transfer the license out first.

I get that, but the new device (newest install) won't allow Find My PC (location). I am afraid it won't work at all if I delete the old device. Also, won't it limit my 5 devices for Microsoft 365?

On your computer, you need to go to Settings > Privacy & Settings > Find my device, make sure "find my device" is toggled on.

Yes, Microsoft 365 is limited to 5 devices.

Will you tell me what is still not working?

You said the new device won't allow "Find my PC", so I gave you the instruction to turn it on.

If that's not what you want, or if you run into issue turning it on, I need more information, what issue did you run into, any screenshot would be helpful too.
