DESIGNER - cannot use this photos app

The latest updates have once again fixed something that was not broken - although this might prove the best fix thus far.

I refer to PICTURE or PHOTO management using DESIGNER.

When I open Designer after signing in the selected photo becomes a whiteout and all the editing controls are frozen.

Does anyone know enough to give me some kind of tutorial so that I might use this - until they change it again?

Unless of course the freezing to whiteout is something to do with the update and still needs sorting out....?

Hi Erik,

Do you mean after an update the option from Photos > Edit with Designer is not working anymore?

What Windows version do you currently have? Type winver in search.

I just tested and works fine for me on 23H2.

Could you try to Repair/Reset/Uninstall and Reinstall the Photos app?
Go to Apps > Installed Apps > Photos > 3 dots for these options.
If you uninstall it, reinstall it from the Microsoft Store.

I look forward to your response.
Levi

Thank you Levi

I have not used photo editing for a little while so I can only assume that Designer appeared as a result of one of the recent updates.

Designer requested a sign-in which I did successfully but then it froze into a white screen with all the editing tools to the left of the view - which had contained the photo for all of several seconds before going white. The parameters of the photo remained at the top of the screen but no photo.

My Winver is 22H2. I usually allow updates to trickle in as they become available and don't force them so it occurs to me that MS is aware of this glitch and may well have addressed it and it will become available when my machine next updates. Also my PC (a 2013 HP laptop) is now a bit slow but all I can afford to maintain. It does train one to be patient.

I am always a bit hesitant to uninstall things (I am something of a tyro at this) but I will see if any further updates are available and see if a newer version will sort out the problem I am experiencing before I do anything else.

Most grateful for all the assistance I get on this forum.

Erik

Hello Erik,

Thank you for your message. Having an older device might not give you the best performance for the latest features which require better processing power.

I most appreciate the fact that you are not forcing updates to be installed as soon as they drop. It's better to wait until completely necessary to install them to avoid early update bugs.

Reinstalling the Photos app will not do any harm. You can still try it if you are up to it.

However, Designer is also available on the web. You can upload the picture here and have the same features. Try this out and see if you like it or not

Kind Regards,
Levi

Thank you again but....

Apparently this DESIGNER app makes considerable use of AI?

Is it not possible to get back the simple editing that was available two or three updates ago?

It was simple and very straightforward to use, no signing in or other weird stuff to do.

I do not like this nor do actually WANT to use it and wonder why it is forced on us with no other options available

I just dug around a bit and found LEGACY still not as nice to use as the one before it but that seems to have vanished

I will be happy using the Legacy app for the minor editing that I do.

Hello,

I want to clarify that I am not employed by Microsoft and have no affiliation with them. I am a user, just like you. What they do with their apps is beyond our control.

Yes, the designer incorporates some AI features. However, the basic editing option remains available. I will send you a screenshot.

I thank you Levi and understand that you do now represent MS.

I have selected the legacy system and for the moment I am happy to use it - nowhere near as good as the system that preceded it as far as being user-friendly is concerned but better than trying to learn something new YET AGAIN.

Once again thank you for your readiness to assist
