C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Temp filled with contents of zip files

My C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Temp is filling up with the contents of the zip files from my library.  In one week 35 Gig of files were added.  I have no idea what application is doing this.  Norton 360 is loaded on my Vista 64 based system but it is not indicating any virus problems.

Follow these steps to Cleanup your disk:

Start Disk Cleanup

To free up space on your hard disk, Disk Cleanup finds and then removes temporary files on your computer that you decide you no longer need.

If you have more than one drive or partition on your computer, you will be prompted to choose which drive you want Disk Cleanup to clean.

·         Open Disk Cleanup by clicking the Start button, clicking All Programs, clicking Accessories, clicking System Tools, and then clicking Disk Cleanup.

·         There is an option to delete thumbnails. Check that and run the Cleanup.

 

Note

Here's another way to open Disk Cleanup: Click the Start button. In the Search box, type Disk Cleanup, and then, in the list of results, click Disk Cleanup.

Disk Cleanup only clears temporary files that haven't been modified in a week - so you may need to go to temp files directly to delete the rest and keep your system from overloading with them http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/quick-tip-windows-vista-temp-files-directory/.

Here's a link to a thread on scripts to delete temporary files on shutdown - which may saye you the task of doing so yourself every day until the problem is resolved: http://www.vistax64.com/vb-script/192110-script-delete-files-shutdown.html.

To speed up the search function, rebuild the Search Index: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/rebuilding-the-search-index-in-windows-vista/ (but this may not last long if it's being caused by the .tmp files being created).  Incidentally, how did you determine it was the Search function that is causing the problem - that may help in coming up with a solution.

I don't know why Vista search is creating so many .tmp files - it doesn't on my system and it shouldn't on yours (what version of Vista are you using?).  Something is wrong.  Perhaps there's something wrong with your system files.  Let's check them.

Go to Start / All Programs / Accessories / Command prompt and right click on command prompt and click run as Administrator.

Type sfc /scannow and enter and let it run.  It will scan and try to fix some of your system files.  Hopefully it will complete with no corruption it could not repair (if there is such corruption post back here or try to analyze it to find the problem file(s) using

While in Command Prompt, type chkdsk /f /r and enter and let it run.  It will scan and try to fix any corruption or bad sectors on your hard drive and mostly remove that as a cause.

If that doesn't work, then please post any repeating error messages from the Event Viewer concerning search (Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Event Viewer).  Here's how to use Event Viewer: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic40108.html.

If that doesn't work, we'll need to do a system repair/upgrade using the genuine Windows Vista Installation Disk (one you own or one you can borrow from ANYONE).  Here's the procedure:
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html.  Although this will not affect your data, settings, or programs, you should still backup your data before starting just to be on the safe side. If the other procedures don't work, THIS one is almost certain to work.  You may have a lot of updates to re-install (including any service packs you had to remove).  If the version on the system cane with SP1 or SP2 pre-installed and the disk is an earlier version, then you'll need to make a slipstream disk as follows: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/151606-vista-sp1-slipstream-installation-dvd.html.  

Hopefully one of these procedures will resolve your problem.  If not, post back and we'll try something else.  Post back in any case so we'll know how it turned out.
