CPU usage very high - Service Host: Local Service (No Network) (4) since latest Windows updates

This is Windows 10 on a Surface Pro 3. Since installing the latest round of updates, the Service Host process is using 40-50% CPU at all times, making the computer virtually unusable. Performance trace is at https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=4594BB0DBBCD361B!10491&authkey=!AE_91U2GLbblces&ithint=file%2czip

Hi, Jed.

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community. We in Community will try to resolve your issue the best way we can.

I would suggest that you try the methods mentioned below and check if you can resolve the issue:

Method 1: System File Checker is a utility in Windows that allows users to scan for corruptions in Windows system files and restore corrupted files.

To perform SFC Scan, refer to the below link:

Note: Steps mentioned for Windows 8/8.1, will work fine with Windows 10.

Method 2: Run DISM Commands:

1) Press Windows + x on your keyboard.

2) Select Command prompt (Admin) to open Administrator Command Prompt .

3) In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type the following commands. Press the Enter key after each command:

     dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth
     dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

Hope this information helps. Do revert back to us with the outcome, so that we can assist you further

I'm having the same problem.

Unfortunately, I can't open the start menu either. The search box in the task tray won't accept input and I can't open Edge. I can select File Explorer and other apps in the task bar, just not edge. I can't open the start screen using the Windows Key, nor can I open it with the mouse.

I tried using an external Bluetooth keyboard/mouse but same problem.

Tried this advice on my Surface Pro 3.  "Service Host: Local  Service (No Network)(4)" is still top CPU process hogging 25%, down from 60% but still too high and Surface Pro getting hot.

Thanks - Have already run this. I think it did find a problem  first  time  around, re-ran without  issues.  CPU usage back to 65%, all being used by Service Host: Local Service ...  Surface Pro 3 (i7) Windows10 lasting just over 1 hour on battery and is hot to hold :-(

I finally have my type cover working. Ran sfc scannow but still have the problem too. CPU fluctuates between 30-65%. Virtually unusable on battery as it drains too quickly.

For me, for whatever reason after making my computer completely unusable all day on Monday, it just suddenly went away and I didn't have the issue at all since then. Was unable to make and changes to have solved it so it remains a mystery to me...

Well, FFS, I come into work this morning, dock my Surface, and in a few minutes the fans are going wild again. Open up Task Manager, and the same Service Host: Local Service (No Network) (4) is using 50% CPU again. If I'm lucky it'll steal the first day and a half of my work week from me again.

Need a fix for this NOW NOW NOW Microsoft.

Hi,

Welcome to Microsoft Community and thank you for your interest in Windows 10.

I suggest you to remove unnecessary external device (not mouse and keyboard) before starting your system in safe mode.

To start your system in safe mode follow the below steps:

  1. Press and hold Shift key and restart your Computer.
  2. Select Troubleshoot.
  3. Select Advance Option.
  4. Select Startup Repair.
  5. Follow the on Screen instruction.

For more information refer to the below link:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/user-accounts-faq#1TC=windows-8

Note:Applies to Windows 10 also.

After starting your system your system in Safe Mode let’s perform Clean Boot and check if it helps.

A clean boot is performed to start Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This helps eliminate software conflicts that occur when you install a program or an update or when you run a program in Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista. You may also troubleshoot or determine what conflict is causing the problem by performing a clean boot.

Please refer the steps given in the link below to perform a Clean Boot:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135?ppud=4&wa=wsignin1.0

Note: Please go through the section: How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with clean boot of the Kb article to boot the computer in normal startup after fixing the issue.

Hope it helps, reply to us with the status of your issue. We will be happy to assist you.

Thank you.
