Code 19 Error - Mouse Not Working

I have been having a problem since yesterday. I tried to uninstall Kaspersky Pure 2.0 using their removal tool in safe mode. When I rebooted, the software was gone, but my mouse wasn't working. I opened up device manager and under the mouse, it had an exclamation next to it being identified as "Code 19."

I Googled the error and apparently it happens when there is a driver conflict? I tried uninstalling then re-installing the drivers but it didn't work. Upon further Googling I found some people suggested to remove entries in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96F-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} called UpperFilters? Deleting this is supposed to automatically cause the drivers to be renstalled, so I deleted it, rebooted, nothing. System Restore also did nothing.

I have tried going in safe mode, but the mouse still won't work. I have contacted Kaspersky Technical Support but they didn't do anything, and Microsoft Phone Support wants to charge me $99 dollars to fix my registry.

I have a Windows 7 upgrade disk but my computer won't recognize it if I try booting from it. The CD is not corrupted however.

Running on Windows 7 64-bit, HP Pavilion a1430n desktop. This is an old pc, so I can't find any chipset drivers.

Help?

Hi MudassirAC,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Community Forum.

Based on the information, you are receiving Code 19 error and unable to use the mouse after removing Kaspersky Pure 2.0.

It would be helpful if you could reply to these questions to assist you better.

1. Are you using a wired or wireless mouse?

2. What is the make and model of the mouse?

3. If it is a wired mouse and connected via USB, then are you able to connect other USB devices without any issues?

This may happen if the hardware device configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged.

Let's try the following steps and check if it helps.

Method 1:

You may check if the mouse works on a different computer.

You may also refer to the article and check if it helps:

To remove and reinstall all USB controllers, follow these steps.

a. Click Start and type “sysdm.cpl” (without quotes) in the Open box, and then click OK.

b. Click the Hardware tab and click the Device Manager Button.

c. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.

d. Right-click every device under the Universal Serial Bus Controllers node, and then click Uninstall to remove them one at a time.

e. Restart the computer.

In response to your questions:
  1. Wired mouse
  2. Microsoft Basic Optical Mouse v2.1
  3. I am able to connect other devices
Method 1: The mouse works on another computer

Method 2: Did not detect any issues

Method 3: I am unclear on what exactly it is that you are asking me to do? Don't you just rephrase this step in method 4?

Method 4: I am unable to because my keyboard is also connected through USB. I was able to install a couple of them before my keyboard became unfunctional. Restarting yielded no results.

Method 5: Already using the latest chipsets as my computer is really old and no more updates have been released.

Also there is no error listed for the mouse in the Device Manager, however I am still unable to use my mouse.

Hi MudassirAC,

Does the mouse work on a different computer?

Method 1:

You may also try performing a SFC scan on the computer which would scan for corrupt system files on the computer and replace them.

How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7

You may check if the mouse works on a different computer.

Method 1:

You may check if the Mousinfo diagnostic tool is available for the Mouse. If it is available, then run the same and check for the issue. If you do not have this software, you cannot open the tool.

a. Click Start and select All Programs.

b. Click Accessories and click on Run.

c. In the Open box, type mousinfo, and then click OK.

Click the mouse buttons to check whether the button clicks are recognized as UP and DOWN commands in the tool. If the mouse buttons are not recognized, you may have a defective device.

You may also get in touch with the Microsoft Hardware support for further assistance.

Hey JBill_78

What happened with me was I was unable to find a solution and no one was able to help me (for free, I might add) so I ended up reinstalling Windows by ripping the files from the CD onto a different computer and creating a bootable USB. It was the easiest solution I could think of on my own. You could try that, or any of the other methods I mentioned that I had tried in the first post.

Hope this helps! Good luck!
