clean install of Windows 10 - choice of user name?

Hi everyone,

I'm going to be doing a clean install of Windows today, and thought I'd use the opportunity to change the ghastly user name Windows generally gives me, the one used for the C:\Users\*name* file.

I know it's impossible to change after installation - that's what I found out after searches earlier - but at which point of the installation can it be done? I don't recall ever being asked what name I'd like to use.

appreciate a pointer on this.

thanks,

best,

Chris

Hello Chris,

When you are installing, reinstalling, or even setting up Windows 10 on a new computer for the first time, you will have the option to name your User ID when you create a local account. One of the steps in Windows 10 asks you to use your Microsoft account:

Instead of signing in with your Microsoft account, select the "Skip this step" option, after which you should be able to create a local account on your computer.

The "Who's going to use this PC?" field is how Windows 10 will determine the name of the account and the name used for the user's folder.

Hope this helps.

Hi Chris, you don;t need to use Cortana - I never do, there will be a checkbox on the bottom left of your screen to turn off Cortana during the Out of Box setup at the end of the installation process . . .
