CD/DVD does not work anymore after updating to Windows 10

Hi all,

After updating to Windows 10 I thought it worked perfectly fine. Sadly after using it a few days and wanting to watch a DVD with the family I found out that Windows did not detect my CD/DVD player/writer. Have tried a few things already but nothing seems to work. Even deleted the driver. After restarting my laptop I found the driver in my driver list but it still doesn't show in Windows.

I'm running Windows 10 on an Acer Aspire 7551G and never had a problem with the laptop while using Windows 8.1.

Anyone else who has this problem? Please tell me what to do!!!

Thanks in advance.

Hi Richard,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

This issue you have experienced might be due to incompatible drivers. I can understand that it must be difficult for you when things are not working as it should. Let us try these methods and check if this helps.

Method 1.

You may update the Display driver from Device Manager manually and check if this helps.

a) Open run command by pressing Windows key + R and type “devmgmt.msc” (without quotes) and hit Enter.

b) Spot and expand the “DVD/CD ROM drives”.

c). Right click on the driver and select “Update Driver Software”. Once this is done, restart the computer to check the problem fixed.

Method 2.

Check and download the latest device drivers from the manufacture's website. If there no updated drivers available on the computer manufacturer’s website, then trying installing it in compatibility mode. Compatibility mode runs the program using settings from a previous version of Windows.

Follow these steps to install the drivers in compatibility mode and check if that helps.

a. Download the driver from the manufacturer’s website.

b. Right-click on the driver setup file and click on ‘properties’.

c. Click on the ‘compatibility’ tab and check the box ‘Run this program in compatibility mode for’ and select Windows 8/8.1 operating system from the drop down menu and proceed with the installation. Once this is done, restart the computer and check if the issue persists.

Let us know if problem still persist, we’re glad to assist.

Acer Aspire 7551g does not work properly with win 10.

Go to Acers page, put your SNID number there, and you see that it is not supported model.

I had to return to win 7.

I had the same problem, same laptop model.

I ran the compatibility checker first and it said I was fine to upgrade. Why was this not caught?

Why was the wrong driver selected?

I was basically forced to upgrade and now I have lost functionality.

Hi,

Is the drive showing up as an "Other device"?

Do you also have an Acer Aspire 7551g?

You have to install the AMD Chipset Drivers for Windows 10:

http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/chipset?os=Windows%2010%20-%2064

The driver has to be installed manually and there are steps in the following topic for installing the drivers manually:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-hardware/sony-optiarc-ad-7580-compatible-or-not-that-seems/5fb6b9c3-b082-4b00-b8f3-e94a96899a46

There has been an update to the drivers since the start of that topic but the newest chipset drivers (Crimson Edition) still unpack to the C:\AMD folder.

Here's another link involving the AMD Chipset Drivers Crimson Edition:

On the link above I found the very simple and quick patch/fix for my Multimedia Optical CD/DVD on Windows 10.

Just follow the simple insstructions by copying and pasting ehe command  furnished by the author into your Command Prompt as administrator.

I did have to do it twice before it worked by now after  years and a new external cd/dvd player recorder, I have my original back.  I hope you have the same success I had today.

Seek and you will find, but you have to mean it.
