Can't upgrade from Windows 10 Home to Pro

I bought a new Asus laptop and it came with Windows 10 Home. I want pro for Bitlocker and the remote desktop. I went online to the Microsoft Store on Jan 2 and bought the upgrade (from this new computer) and it seemed to be applying it (progress circle went from zero to 100%) then rebooted the laptop and then I got a popup notification "We couldn't upgrade your edition."

Since then it's been a nightmare trying to get this done and a huge amount of time lost for me. I thought things were going to be all better and marvelous with Windows 10, but it's been nothing but frustration. I talked to MS on the phone, went to the Microsoft store in person with it (multiple trips), talked to Asus. Nothing works. MS generated a new product key for me, and putting that in doesn't work (tried two different places in Settings where it allows you to enter a new product key). Was told by MS on the phone that it can only be done using a DVD upgrade. Took it back to the MS store for that, and then told me that if they do it that way it will wipe out all of the data and apps that I just spent a week re-installing. I thought the Pro code is built into Win 10 already, and it just takes a product key or license to "Unlock" it? So why have to reinstall the OS and reimage my whole machine? Very frustrated with Microsoft and Win10, maybe I should have listened to others and went with the Macbook.

Thanks for any help. Bill

Hi Bill,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community. We apologize for the inconvenience caused and will assist you in the best possible ways.

I suggest you to download and create an installation media for Windows 10 Pro form the link provided below:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-in/software-download/windows10

After the installation media is created, suggest you to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro from the installation media. When the upgrade asks for product key, enter the product key purchased for Windows 10 Pro. If it does not accept, suggest you to skip the activation step. After the Operating System is installed, suggest you to activate by phone by following the steps below:

  • Press “Windows key + R” and type “slui 4” and press Enter.
  • Select the Region from the list and click Next.
  • Call the Toll-Free number provided on top and can activate via phone.

Hope this helps. Keep us posted on the status for further assistance.

Give this a try:

Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro using the following default product key:

VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T

Review instructions how to perform an Easy Upgrade using the default key:

How to Perform an Easy Upgrade in Windows 10

After upgrading, proceed to enter the Windows 10 Pro key you got.

Click Start > Settings > Update & security > Activation > Change the product key

Enter the product key, close then restart your computer, it should reactivate automatically.

Andre

Before I try this, will it require me to re-install all of my apps and data? Is this an in-place upgrade or a reinstall of the OS, which would wipe everything? I do not want to re-install everything again.

I tried your key and got the exact same result "We couldn't upgrade your edition..."  I followed the instructions in the link you provided.

Before I try this, is it an in-place upgrade (won't require me to reinstall all of my apps/data) or a OS re-install that will require me to do all of that again? They had a disc in the store and were going to do it that way but it gave a warning that all apps/data would have to be reinstalled. I definitely don't want that.

No, it will not require that you reinstall your applications or reinstall the OS, it simply unlocks the Pro edition.

Nobody can answer my question? I asked if Eeshwar's solution (creating the install media) will do an in-place upgrade (not remove my files and apps) or if it will wipe everything off the computer. I created the media, but when I boot to it, it doesn't give me any indication either way, and I don't want to try it unless I know for sure. Andre's solution did not work.

It was my Avast anti-virus/firewall software that was causing the problem. I finally figured it out. I should have known. Surprised nobody at the Microsoft store or tech support thought about that!
