Can't tag my files. Right-clicking a file and clicking properties does not show a tags option in the details tab.

The details pane is visible, but the tags option is not. Even right-clicking a file and clicking properties does not show a tags option in the details tab. This has happened with all the file types I tried so far, which are jpg, png, gif and avi.

Hi Majd,

The files might be copy protected hence you might be facing issue editing the tag or this could be an issue due to changes in Windows settings. Let’s try these methods and check if it helps:

Method 1: Follow these steps:

Step 1: Take a screenshot of picture by pressing Print Screen on your keyboard. Open Microsoft Paint and save it as Jpeg or Gif file.

Step 2: Try to edit the tag of the screenshot picture and check. Follow these steps:

  1. Open picture in Windows explorer.
  2. Click on View tab in Ribbon.
  3. Click on Details Pane and click on the picture you want to edit Tag.
  4. On right side pain you will see Tag: Add a tag
  5. Click on Add a tag.

Method 2: I would also suggest you to check if the same issue occur in Safe Mode on Windows 8.1 desktop PC and check if the issue occurs there as well.

Step 1: Start your computer in safe mode

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-including-safe-mode

Step 2:

Follow the Microsoft KB article to perform clean boot on the computer. A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.

How to perform a clean boot in Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista

Disclaimer: After you have finished troubleshooting, follow these steps from section “How to reset the computer to start as usual after clean boot troubleshooting” to reset the computer to start as usual.

Hope this information helps. If you need further assistance with Windows, let us know and will be glad to help.

Hi John,

Thank you very much for your help. Method 1 does show that the issue is due to copy protection. Is there a way that I can still tag the pictures? It is only for my own use in order to be able to search through them efficiently as I have hundreds of them. Thanks again.

Hi Majd,

Unfortunately, you cannot tag the media files and applications which are copyrighted.

Copy protection, also known as content protection, copy prevention and copy restriction, is any effort designed to prevent the reproduction of software, films, music, and other media, usually for copyright reasons. Various methods have been devised to prevent reproduction so that companies will gain benefit from each users who obtain a copy of their product.

Copyright protects original works of authorship.

Hope this information helps.
