Can't install pen tablet driver: msimg32.dll | 0xc0000020 | Bad Image

Hi all!
I have Pen Tablet (Huion Inspiroy H640P) which worked fine until something went wrong with my desktop PC. I have had couple of BSODs with different stop codes, maybe it was after recent windows updates. And then my tablet stop working. I decided to reinstall drivers but can't launch *.exe file because of an error.

c:\windows\system32\msimg32.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support. Error status 0xc0000020

Just for now the tablet works with half of its surface, buttons on pen are assigned to something useless in production. I need that drivers. So, please, help.

What I already tried:

Tried to install other software, that works fine.
I can't roll back updates, because 10 days period are gone.

I can't restore system, because restoration point was made 2 days ago, means already with corrupted msimg32.dll.

Looks like I cant reset windows to factory, because I had Windows 10 installed and then updated it to Windows 11. Now it didn't want to download from Cloud and I haven't disk or usb version (and I don't know in this case do I need Win10 or Win11).

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth - 100% The restore operation completed successfully. The operation completed successfully.

I used some comands in cmd or powershell and identified msimg32.dll as corrupted, because it's HASH was different as system expected both in system32 directory and in storage.

I tried to copy

>takeown /f C:\windows\system32\msimg32.dll

Overwrite c:\windows\system32\msimg32.dll? (Yes/No/All): y

The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

I tried to boot from usb flash with Puppy to copy file manually bypassing Windows. But as I imagine when WIndows boot it sees that hash of dll is diffrent and instantly changes that dll to currupted from the storage.

Hi Andrii Kvitka,

Welcome to the Microsoft community and thank you for asking your question in the community!Based on the information you have provided, you are experiencing problems with the installation of your digital pad driver, specifically due to a corrupt msimg32.dll file. This corrupted DLL file may prevent the driver from installing correctly, thus affecting the functionality of the digital pad. Since you've already tried the SFC and DISM fixes, as well as your fallbacks and restore points being unavailable, here's what I'd suggest you try upgrading in-place. Let's try to perform an in-place upgrade, which will refresh your Windows files and operating system without deleting files or applications. However, we still recommend backing up your computer in advance if it contains important data. Once you have completed the backup, follow the steps in the guide below:

  • Download Media Creation Tool by visiting the site below and clicking "Download Tool Now" (not "Update Now"). Download Windows 11(microsoft.com) Run the MCT tool, select Upgrade this computer now, and select Keep files and applications.

Disclaimer: Let’s try performing an in-place install or in-place upgrade which will refresh your Windows files and operating system without removing files or applications. That being said, we always recommend that if you have important data, you should back it up before making large system changes. If you want to back up your data first, please do so. Once you are done backing up, you can follow the steps in the following guides:

Please let me know if I have misunderstood. Tell us the results and we will get back to you as soon as possible. We look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Zhang Yang,

In-place upgrade worked just fine!
Drivers installed with no problems. I made couple reboots, seems like system runs stable, almost all customized software UI on their places as well as licensing.
Also, I see Windows backed up 30GB, Windows.old folder appeared in C:\

Thank you for help.

Best regards,

I am glad I was able to help you resolve this concern. To help other customers who may be facing the same issue, please click‘Yes’ underneath the post that had the solution for you. This highlights the information for other customers. Thanks for your cooperation.

I have the following explanation about your Windows.old concern. Ten days after upgrading to Windows 10, previous versions of Windows are automatically deleted from your computer. However, if you need to free up disk space and you're sure that the files and settings are located where you want them to be in Windows 10, you can safely delete them yourself.

Note: If you have any other unsaved files left in the Windows.old folder, please make a backup to save them.

Here are the steps to remove Windows.old:

  • In the search box on the taskbar, type "Settings" and select it from the list of results.

  • Select System > Storage > This PC, then scroll to the bottom of the list and select Temporary Files Select "Temporary Files".

  • Under Delete Temporary Files, select the Previous Versions of Windows checkbox and click Delete Files.
