Can't delete temporary files in Windows 10

Windows 10 says my temporary files have 5.16 GB of temporary files.  Using this recommended method

Step 1

  1. Press Windows key + R
  2. Type temp and click OK
  3. Press Ctrl + A and click Delete

Step 2

  1. Press Windows key + R
  2. Type %temp% and click OK
  3. Press Ctrl + A and click Delete

Step 3

  • Press Windows key + R
  • Type prefetch and click OK
  • Press Ctrl A and click Delete

the files don't get deleted and looking at the size of the files I find that I have less than 30 Mbytes of temporary files

My computer (a tablet with keyboard) has only 32 GB of storage

What do I need to do to solve this problem?

Looking at the size of the files I find that I have less than 30 Mbytes of temporary files.

You're probably chasing your tail while trying to keep the total amount of temp files below 30 MBytes. Some of them might be in use which makes them inaccessible.

A better method to delete unwanted stuff goes like this:

  1. Press the Windows key.
  2. Type cleanmgr.exe. Do NOT press Enter.
  3. Right-click the Disk Cleanup window at the top, then left-click Run as Administrator.
  4. Select what you wish to delete.

I have always wondered about the wisdom (or lack thereof) of manufacturers selling Windows machines with only 32 GBytes of disk space. I would consider 250 GBytes a minimum.

I don't get anything at all when I press the Windows key.

I'm trying to keep the temporary files below 5 Gb as reported by Windows 10.

I find they are only 30 MB max.

30 MBytes is well below 5 GBytes . . .

You can invoke cleanmgr like so:

  1. Create a desktop shortcut for cmd.exe.
  2. Right-click it, then left-click Run as Administrator.
  3. Accept the challenge.
  4. Type cleanmgr and press Enter.

How do I create a desktop shortcut for cmd.exe?

-> Long live the right mouse button click!

  1. Right-click an empty area on the desktop.
  2. Left-click New, then Shortcut
  3. Type cmd.exe and press Enter a couple of times.
  4. Explore the many uses of right-clicks. No matter where you are, it is extremely useful and versatile.

I understood you to say not to press Enter after typing cleanmgr?

-> Just follow the steps I gave you. They must be read as a complete set.

I don't get anything when I right-click an empty area on the desk top.

I'm used to using right-clicks.

There are many error messages in the Event Logs so I think I will have to reload Windows 10 from an external drive.

This is what you are supposed to get when you right-click an empty area on your desktop. If you don't then either your mouse is defective or you have a fundamental problem with Windows.

The mouse works fine on another computer.  I've tried another mouse and it still doesn't work.  I think I will reload Windows from an external drive.

Thanks for your help, even though it didn't solve the problem.
