Cannot update win 8 64 bit to win 8.1 64 bit because my processor doesn't support compareexchange128?

It does though, I checked using Coreinfo.

It supports LAHF-SAHF.

It supports CMPXCHG16B.

It supports PREFETCHW INSTRUCTION.

So why am I getting an error message telling me that my processor is not compatible?

I have been running windows 8 64 bit since the early days without any problems.

I have done some research and seen references to virtualbox being at fault, but I don't have virtualbox.

Help, this is driving me mad.

My processor is an Intel Q9650 Core 2, Quad, 3GHZ.

Hi,

What is the make and model of the computer?

The
system requirements for Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1 are nearly the same as the requirements for Windows 8, if your PC is already running Windows 8 (or Windows RT), in most cases, you can get the free update to Windows 8.1 (or Windows RT 8.1).

You may refer to the following Microsoft article for more information:
Update to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8

However,
let’s try the following methods before installing Windows 8.1 and check if it helps.

Note: Please take a backup of all important data before you install.

Method 1:

First, I would suggest you to check if there is any pending Windows Update needs to be install.

If yes, then I would suggest you to install the update and check if it helps.

I would suggest you to download and install al the latest chipset drivers and Hardware Driver update from the manufactures’ website.

Method 2:

I would suggest you to disconnect all the external devices except mouse and keyboard and check if it helps.

This will helps us to find out, if the issue is due to external devices or operating system files.

Method 3:

I would suggest you to disable the Security Software and check if it helps.

Note:  Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

Hope it helps.

If you have any other questions or you need any other information about Windows, feel free to post your questions and we will be glad to help.

 I built my computer myself.

It has an Abit IP35 Pro XE motherboard.

Processor is a dual core, quad Intel Q9650 3ghz overclocked to 4.50ghz.  8GB memory, Nvidia GTX660 graphics card.

Has been running windows 8 64 bit Pro with media centre since the very early days. I purchased win 8 direct from Microsoft online and downloaded it.

All drivers and updates are up to date. I double checked.

I have not tried disconnecting all devices so I will try that.

I have tried disabling my antivirus software (EsetNod32 v6) but made no difference.

I cleared all cookies and deleted all internet temp files, it made no difference.

I will report back after trying with everything disconnected except mouse and keyboard.

Regards,

Steve....

I have now tried to get the update with everything disconnected and still the same result.

I had no problems when I installed the original windows 8 and I have not added any new hardware since then.

My system is exactly the same as when I did the original upgrade from windows 7 64 bit.

I have just run "Coreinfo" again and it seems I misread or misunderstood the report.

My processor does NOT support CMPXCHG16B.

So that is the reason I cannot upgrade.

I assume that windows 8 must not require this to be supported as I have been using it for some time now.

Oh well, ce la vie! Thanks for trying to help anyway.

I assume windows 8 will continue to get security updates etc? and not be abandoned?

Hi Steve,

Thank you for the update.

I would suggest you to check if there is any pending updates are available for BIOS, if yes I suggest you to install the same and check if it helps.

Note: Modifying BIOS/ complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuring of BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk.

Hope it helps.

I have also the Q9650. But my Coreinfo says that CMPXCHG16B is supported!

CX16 * Supports CMPXCHG16B instruction

But Windows 8.1 couldn't be installed! Why! I have also a fresh win 8 Installation without any other applications than those coming with win8.

Please help!

Hmmm, that is strange that your processor supports it and mine doesn't.

Perhaps my motherboard or the bios is at fault then.

I shall look for an updated Bios, but any searches in the past have ended up with a negative result and my motherboard is no longer supported by ABIt as they stopped making motherboards.

Are you sure that you have a * and not a - indicating that your processor does NOt support it?
