Cannot change from PIN-Sign in to Password

Hello everyone,

in order to access my Windows 11 PC (Set up with Microsoft Account) via Remotedesktop i need to set a Password.

My research online showed me that to do so, i can enable the Password sign in option by disabling the "For improved security, only allow windows hello sign-in for Microsoft Accounts on this device"-option. However, when i do so Windows "forgets" the change from On to Off as soon as i close and open the settings ...

Anyone got an idea?

Best Regards

Tim

Hello Tim,

Welcome to the Microsoft Community.

If you have already disabled the "For improved security, only allow windows hello sign-in for Microsoft Accounts on this device"-option, but your issue persists after that, you need to disable your PIN code in this situation to make sure you are only required the password to access your Windows from remote side. If you cannot delete PIN information directly from the settings page, the complete steps to remove PIN information on your device are as follows:

Clear the contents of the NGC folder, which is where biometric data related to Windows Hello features such as fingerprint and face recognition is stored on Windows devices. You can also try to delete this folder, and the system will regenerate it. Here's how.

1. You can try to manually delete this folder, usually in the directory C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile

Try to delete it directly:

Right-click the NGC folder

Select "Delete"

2. If you can't delete it manually, enter safe mode to delete it.

In the Settings app on your Windows device, select "System > Recovery" or use the following shortcuts:

Under Recovery options, next to Advanced startup, select Restart now

After restarting, select Troubleshooting > Advanced Options > Boot Settings > Restart

Select 4 or 5

Once in, search for CMD in the search bar, select Run as administrator, and then try entering it here again.

icacls C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Ngc /T /Q /C /RESET

Ren C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Ngc Ngc.old

Once completed, close the command prompt and restart your PC
