So how did you obtain 10?

Did you buy it; was it the free upgrade.

If it was the free upgrade from 8/8.1 > 10: no, you can't go back to 8/8.1 unless you remove 10 completely and then you would have nothing to install a VM in.'

you have to explain more

Is the Windows 10 in question installed as the host or is on the virtual machine?

Is it the Windows 10 host or the Windows 10 guest that you want to downgrade to Windows 8?

Either of which, If it was Windows 8 that was initially installed before the upgrade to Windows 10, you can downgrade to Windows 8 without losing data if the windows.old folder is still intact. Other than that, to downgrade you'll need to perform a clean install but you can backup your files prior to that.

There is NO download for Windows 8.

And if 8 came preinstalled it is not used in a VM anyway as that is contrary to the OEM license.

Microsoft summed it up very well;

You only have a limited time to use this method:

Go back to Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 - Microsoft Support

  • If you upgraded to Windows 10 recently and want to go back to Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, here are some things you can try. This info only applies if you had Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 on your computer before you upgraded. If your computer came with Windows 10 installed, no earlier version of Windows was ever on it. In that situation, you can't go back to Windows 7 or Windows 8.1. Note: The option to go back to your previous version of Windows is available only for a limited time following the upgrade (10 days, in most cases).

    I see you have edited it.

    You are confused with watching 8.1 > 8.

    If a person had a computer preinstalled with 8 > then they upgraded to 8.1 > IF they did a Refresh it went back to 8.

    That is nothing to do with your Windows 10 question.

    That was something solely to do with Windows 8/8.1.
