C Drive Getting Full for no reason

My C drive keeps getting full. Only around 45 MB is free out of 228 GB. The biggest folder I have in there is Windows 10 with around 3 GB. There are no large hidden files. I check the Windows/Logs/CBS. It is only around 150 MB.

I removed all downloads, temporary files, caches etc. The freed space quickly fills up again.

I tried the check disk chkdsk option. It did not change anything.

Does anyone know how to fix it?

Hi Prasanth,

This is Wil, one of the independent advisor, an expert with Windows 10 and a fellow Windows 10 user like you.

This is what I usually recommend to people with concern about disk space. First, try to check which folder is consuming your hard disk space. You may use an application called Treesize. Treesize would give you an accurate size for each folder. You may download a 30-day trial of Treesize on this link https://customers.jam-software.de/downloadTrial...

After that, I would suggest performing a disk cleanup to delete temporary and unnecessary files on your computer https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/402661.... Personally, this what I am doing to track my hard disk space and free up space on it.

I hope the information I provided will help you. But If you need further assistance, please do reply back and I will research more on this issue, and please wait for my response with additional options for troubleshooting. Have a nice day.

Thanks,
Wilfred P.

Hi Wilfred,

Thank you for your reply.

So, I downloaded Treesize and ran it. The biggest folder by far seems to be Temp folder located in Windows folder. It is 137 GB.

What do you suggest I do next?

Press Windows key+R together, type %temp%, select all and delete them.

Then go to C drive, right click->properties->general->disk cleanup->clean up system files->select temporary files and delete them.

Lastly, open settings->system->storage->configure storage sense->clean now.

That should do the trick.

Hi Hanyo,

The problem still persists. The temp file shows a ton of files with names like this:

Application_5A46936F-1FFE-0000-03E4-A35AFE1FD601

These files did not get removed after performing the operations that you mentioned. There are also some files from the Adobe Creative Cloud which I am not able to remove. I do not want them. Do you know how I can remove them?

OK. There are 2 issues here.

1 The %temp% command opens C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Temp folder.

The problem is not in that Temp folder. It is in the Temp folder that is located inside Windows, i.e C:\Windows\Temp\

2 The screenshot below is the error I get when I try to delete all the files in C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Temp folder

I try to manually delete the .evtx folders in Windows Temp but they keep getting recreated within seconds.

OK.

I tried this.

I went to Settings -> Privacy ->Background Apps and disabled Windows store and some other unnecessary apps.

Then I went to Windows->Temp and removed all files that I could.

Now I have 160 GB free out of 228 GB as opposed to earlier 45 MB.

Hopefully this should do it.

Edit: Rebooted the computer and those Event Logs are being generated again. I guess the low tech solution if to periodically manually delete these logs.

But if there is any way to fix them automatically, please tell me.

Try the steps given here,

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4458149/windows-10-low-disk-space-error-due-to-a-full-temp-folder

https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/how-to-prevent-windows-even-log-from-filling-up-disk.3525774/

if that doesn't work then this,

https://superuser.com/questions/1371229/low-disk-space-after-filling-up-c-windows-temp-with-evtx-and-txt-files

Also make sure you have updated to the latest release of Windows 10. This problems seems to have been occurring on older versions and is a known issue(more details here).

I would suggest performing a disk cleanup like what I mentioned above to delete the temporary and unnecessary files on your Windows 10. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/402661...

Please see the sample screenshot below of how I use it personally.
