Bluetooth headphones are connected, but audio still comes out the speakers?

Earlier today I was using my Bose QC45 headphones and they were working perfectly fine. I got up and walked somewhere with them still on, and they disconnected when I was out of range of my laptop as usual. However, this time, when I came back to reconnect, the audio would not play through the headphones. Even though the bluetooth connects fine, I noticed that when I look at the device in the bluetooth menu, it simply says "Connected," when it usually says something like "Connected, Audio, Mic."

Here are things I've already tried:

- Making both devices forget each other and then repairing

- Factory resetting my headphones

- Updating my computer

- Trying to update my headphone drivers (though I may have done this wrong honestly)

The headphones work perfectly fine with my phone, and my AirPods are able to connect fine with my laptop. They really just don't seem to like each other, and I can't figure out why. Please help.

Hi Mae Fonte,

Welcome to Microsoft Community.

The existing description (AirPods working fine) seems to steer the issue toward the possibility of compatibility level.

Would you mind sharing more information about this issue with us?

  • Is this your first time using the Bose QC45 headphones?

Or have you been using them for a long time and only experienced the issue today?

  • Were there any special events prior to the day you encountered the issue?

For example, system update, driver update, application update, BIOS update?

  • Are there any Bluetooth or audio related devices in your Device Manager that are in an abnormal state?

Open Device Manager - Microsoft Support

  • Are all the services in your Bose QC45 device enabled while your device is paired?

You can use "More Bluetooth settings" (or "More devices and printer settings") to quickly jump to the device control panel, then find Bluetooth device's property management page, where the "Services" tab lists the services available for the Bluetooth device.

    .

If I misunderstand your situation, feel free to correct me and share the information.

Hello,

Thank you for your reply.

This set of Bose headphones is my first. I've been using them for about three months now, and have never had this issue until yesterday after my connection was lost after stepping out of range. As I mentioned before, usually it reconnects just fine after coming back into range and reconnecting.

There were no special events that I know of. I only updated my computer after the problem arose to see if that would fix it, but it did not.

When I checked the services, they were all checked. I then experimented by unchecking Audio Sink and Remote Control to match the photo you attached and realized that it displayed that the headphone mic connected. However, still won't.

After experimenting a bit more, I realized the headphone mic connected after unchecking the Audio Sink. I'm still not sure what the issue is.

Thank you for your help so far, I await any further advice.

Hi Mae Fonte,

Thank you for getting back to us.

We would like to confirm some additional information with you.

  • What are the differences in the Services listed when you use AirPods?

  • Does it make a difference if you run more tests with "Handsfree Telephony" unchecked?

  • Detailed update history in your device.

    .

Thanks for your patience and understanding!

Hello!

I am glad to report that unchecking "Handsfree Telephony" worked. The audio is now connected. However, keeping everything checked except for handsfree telephony seems to have sacrificed the headphones' mic input connection. Since I previously discovered that unchecking "Audio Sink" enables the mic connection, I tried to uncheck both handsfree telephony and audio sink, but that just disconnected my device and made it unable to reconnect.

If you know of a possible solution to this, I would love to hear it. However, I am relatively satisfied with just having the audio, as I don't necessarily require the headphone mic.

Thank you for your help!

One of the only few further directions for testing is to test different versions(for example, old version) of the Bluetooth driver.

In my limited experience, for me personally, I have yet to learn of a possible solution for this problem scenario.

The test results you have gotten seem to indicate that there is some conflict between the HandsFree profile and the A2DP profile for this particular hardware (Bose QC45) when running in a particular device environment.

It could be the driver, it could be the headset firmware, it could be the underlying hardware coding of the hardware, or it could be the aging of the components that is limiting the bandwidth performance of the hardware.

Analyzing these underlying contents is beyond our current technical reserves.
