Bluetooth Headphone Microphone Not Working

I have Onn over ear ANC Headphones model 100094748, they say they have built in Microphones, and I am inclined to believe them. I have tried searching for them under input devices, I have tried updating drivers, I have uninstalled the device and reinstalled it twice, neither times worked. Under the playback section of the sound settings, I see two options, Headphones, and Headset, as I have been told I will see. However, every guide simply says "Enable the Headset" but I literally can't. They are disconnected, and I literally cannot re connect them no matter how many times I click the damn button. I remember a long while ago, to fix a game's audio issues, I had to delete or disable something, but I would have thought that re-pairing the headphones or uninstalling the drivers and restarting would have fixed it... Can someone please help me?

*Edit. I had turned off hands free telephony, I have turned it back on, it didn't make a difference.

Hello, Byron Phelps

Welcome to the Microsoft Community.

Hello, thank you for your feedback here on your issue, it seems you are experiencing a Bluetooth headset microphone not working.

First of all thank you for sharing the information, it seems like you've already made some attempts which is great to show that you're a researcher and I'll go ahead and add some more for you:

1. Ensure the Bluetooth Hands-Free Phone feature (HFP) is enabled

You mentioned that you had re-enabled the Hands-Free Phone feature, but it is recommended that you check the Bluetooth profile on your device.

Open Device Manager (press Windows + X and select Device Manager).

Find your Bluetooth adapter and expand it.

Right-click on the Bluetooth device and select Properties.

Under the Services tab, make sure the Handsfree Phone (HFP) and Headset (HSP) profiles are enabled.

If you don't see these profiles, try updating the Bluetooth drivers, it is recommended to go directly to the device manufacturer's website to download the latest version instead of just updating via Windows.

2. Re-pair the headset and make sure the correct profile is selected.

When you mention that the “Headset” option appears but is disconnected and the Bluetooth headset is connected, the audio device usually switches between two profiles:

A2DP profile (for high quality audio, usually for playing music or media)

HSP/HFP profile (for microphone during calls)

You can try the following steps:

Forget and re-pair your device: go to Settings > Devices > Bluetooth and Other Devices, remove your Onn headset from the list, and re-pair it.

When re-pairing, make sure you have the correct profile selected for your PC (it may appear as “Headset” and “Headphones” in the sound settings). If the headset does not connect automatically, it is possible that the Bluetooth driver or settings are not correctly associated with the headset's profile.

3. To set the headset as the default communication device

Right-click the volume icon on the taskbar and select Open Sound Settings.

In the Input section, check that the headset's microphone is displayed. If not, scroll down to Manage sound devices and you should see the available input devices. Enable the microphone for your Onn headset, if it's disabled.

In Sound Settings, switch to the Playback tab, right-click on “Headphones” and set it as the default communication device. This may help your PC to prioritize the use of the headset's microphone.

4. Check Application Settings (if using communication software)

If you are experiencing microphone problems when using communication software such as Skype, Discord, Zoom, etc., make sure that the Onn headset's microphone is selected as the input device in these applications. Sometimes applications will default to using your computer or laptop's built-in microphone instead of the Bluetooth headset's microphone.

5. Update or Rollback Bluetooth Drivers

If you have not tried updating or rolling back the Bluetooth driver, do the following:

Update Driver: Open Device Manager, expand Bluetooth, right-click the Bluetooth adapter, select Update Driver, and select Automatically search for updated drivers.

Roll Back Driver: If the problem occurs after updating the driver, you can try to roll back the Bluetooth driver. In Device Manager, right-click on the Bluetooth device, select Properties, then go to the Drivers tab and select Roll Back Driver (if available).

6. Test on another device

To rule out a problem with the headset hardware itself, you can try connecting your Onn headset to another Bluetooth device (e.g. a cell phone). If the microphone works fine on the other device, it means the problem may be with your PC settings or drivers.

7. Disable/Enable Audio Enhancement

Sometimes, the audio enhancement feature of Windows may cause problems with Bluetooth headsets.

Open Sound Settings, under Playback tab, right-click your headset and select Properties.

In the Enhancements tab, check Disable all enhancements and then apply the settings.

8. Reinstall the audio driver

If you have already tried uninstalling the Bluetooth driver, but have not tried uninstalling and reinstalling the audio driver, you may want to try it again:

Open Device Manager and expand Sound, Video, and Game Controllers.

Right-click on your audio device and select Uninstall Device.

Restart your computer and Windows will automatically reinstall the required drivers.

You can try it out by referring to the steps above, and after that, give some feedback and I will further support you.

Best regards
