blank blue screen after welcome in windows XP

I have XP with SP3 installed. When I switch on, the "Welcome" screen comes on as usual, then the screen goes blue and nothing further happens. No error messages. The mouse pointer shows and can be moved.

I can boot in safe mode and have backed up all data. I tried restoring to previous day then to day before that, but to no avail. The day before that I removed two viruses, Win32: Malob-KF and Hoblig-B, so I am reluctant to restore to an even earlier date. I have Avast anti-virus and it caught these in a routine boot scan. I don't know where these came from as I am careful about websites and emails; they must have somehow slipped past the real time shield. I tried scheduling another boot scan, but nothing seemd to happen in either normal or safe mode.

I have tried searching the Internet for help, but other people with a similar problem always seem to have got error messages or did not have SP1-3 installed.

Grateful for any help.

Hi,

Have you made any changes to the computer prior to the issue?

Method 1: Since you are able to boot in safe mode, try performing clean boot from safe mode and see if that helps.

How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" state
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353

Note: After troubleshooting follow the section “Steps to configure Windows to use a Normal startup state” from the article mentioned above.
Method 2: I would suggest you to perform a full system scan just to be safe.
Here is a link that will give you information on how to perform a full system scan:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx
Note: The Microsoft Safety Scanner expires 10 days after being downloaded. To rerun a scan with the latest anti-malware definitions, download and run the Microsoft Safety Scanner again.
Note 1: Any data files that are infected may only be cleaned by deleting the file entirely, which means there is a potential for data loss.
