It is not that Bitlocker does not work with specific versions but that it is only supplied with Ultimate and Enterprise and cannot be added as a separate utility. It has to be integrated into the disk management system.
As part of considering an encryption system you need to look at why you are implementing it and what your fall back options are. Standalone solution lacks central management so there is no way to recover a lost key. Truecrypt is free but lacks that centralised admin feature.
