Windows 10 works just fine without a touchscreen.
Just how old is your machine? Alienware has a lot of PCs. Could you give us your model?

I have Dell (Alienware) PC with windows 7, telling me all apps are discontinued and it needs and upgrade. I do not have a touchscreen monitor but some have warned me to avoid windows 10 because of that. What would be the best MS version since this monster of a computer is loud, hardy, and a tidbit slow, but undeniably reliable?
Ok its a DELL ( ALIENWARE ).
More information needed on Product Model before suggestion.
What is the MODEL / SERIAL / SERVICE TAG ???
Service Tags @ Product Model Labels are usually found on the Back / Top / Side or Underside of tower cases.
Model should be screen printed on the front bezel somewhere.
If you cant find the Service Tag or Model anywhere download a Computer Information Tool such as SPECCY.
OR : For basic information.
On the keyboard hold the " WIN LOGO KEY " and press " r ".
In Run Box type : msinfo32 and press enter.
Check the Systems Summary as to the Model and other information.
Take a screen snip @ post.

For a computer that originally ran Windows 7, Windows 8.1 is probably the safest upgrade.
Hardware old enough to be in a computer that originally ran Windows 7 is not likely to have driver support in Windows 10, which means that it may or may not work. Many former Windows 7 users who post here have discovered that their hardware doesn't work properly, or at all. That's not Microsoft's fault.
In addition, the software your computer is currently running will likely need to be updated to work properly with Windows 10.
For hardware and software, you can find out if it will work properly on Windows 10 by asking the hardware manufacturers and software developers.
Windows 8.1 is the successor to Windows 7, so your hardware and software are more likely to work properly from the get-go.

8.1 is a completely different operating system from XP, Vista and 7.
For a Start there is no Start Menu, etc.
10 is Microsoft's attempt to go back to the old setup.
It depends on the hardware requirements of later operating systems and also whether the computer/laptop manufacturer supports and supplies drivers for the later operating systems as to whether it is possible or feasible to upgrade or not.
Support for 8 ended in Jan, 2016.
Extended Support for 8.1 ends in 2023.
But first check if your computer manufacturer supports and supplies 8.1 drivers for your exact model number:
Also:
"Windows 8.1 system requirements"
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/system-requirements
Processor. 1 gigahertz (GHz)* or faster with support for PAE, NX, and SSE2
And those Microsoft system requirements in my opinion are simply not adequate.
Processor at least 2GHz
RAM 4GB for 32bit and 8GB for 64bit
Hard Drive space 500GBs.
Windows 8/8.1 does not come for free; you have to buy it
Microsoft no longer sells 8/8.1.
Try amazon.com, etc.
Warning:
You do not buy a Product Key by itself, as they are normally stolen/pirated, Volume Licenses which are not for private use, or MSDN keys which are not to be sold by the original subscription holder.
Make sure that you buy the complete sealed package (DVD, license)

Read Section: Beware of Product Keys sold separately.

You may or may not still get 10 for free, but you first have to see if 10 is compatible with your device.
The free upgrade to Windows 10 offer from Microsoft expired on the 29th July, 2016.
You will have to contact MS support and they may be able to assist you with a free upgrade to 10..

First thing to do is to make sure that you have the correct system requirements and that your Computer Manufacturer supplies the correct Drivers for 10 for your Model Number.
"Windows 10 System Requirements"

If you read those Microsoft's system requirements for 10, you will find that if you only go on them you will be sadly disappointed in performance.
You should at least double what they say.
