Backup does not complete because of malware which Windows Defender cannot find

I get a notification that backup does not complete successfully:

Operation did not complete successfully because the file contains a virus or potentially unwanted software.
Error code: Ox800700E1

I go into Windows Defender and look at History for all detected items:

It appears to scan daily and detect Trojan:Win32/Rundas.B each time.
It says The following error occurred: Error code Ox80508023. The program could not find the malware and other potentially unwanted software on this computer.

I cannot clear the condition and so cannot backup my PC.

I have done the following, some several times:

In Windows Defender I selected the detected items and requested removal.

I ran a full scan from Windows Defender. It took a day and a half and found two occurrences of the Trojan which I removed.

I ran Malwarebytes. It found nothing.

Googling suggests this might be to do with a temp file created by backup at some point. I went into Disk Cleanup and deleted everything possible. I had earlier also turned off File History backup and deleted the FileHistory folder.

I restarted the PC.

None of this has made any difference.

My backups are on an external hard drive.

I’m on Windows 10 but backup seems to be controlled by an option called ‘Backup and Restore (Windows 7)’. Is that as it should be?

Hi Seamus,

To assist you better, kindly send us a screenshot and provide more details by answering the following questions:

Method 1: Resolve system corrupted files by running the System File Checker and DISM tool.

  1. Press Windows key + X on your computer.
  2. Choose Command Prompt (Admin).
  3. Type or copy each command followed by hitting Enter:
      sfc /scannow
      dism /online / cleanup-image /restorehealth

Method 2: Perform a clean boot.
A clean boot is performed to start Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. For instructions, refer to this article.

Method 3: Temporarily disable anti-virus software.
We suggest that you temporarily disable the anti-virus software and perform a backup of your computer. Please make sure to re-enable the anti-virus once you're done with the process.
