Backup and Restore more than 3 months

Win 7 pro.

In Backup and Restore, if I go to 'Manage Space' I have backup sets going back 18 months, but if go to 'Restore my files' and I try to 'Choose a different Date' I can only see backup sets going back 3 months. How do I restore from older sets?

Hello Brian,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

I understand that you want to restore your computer to state where it was working.

But, I would need some more information to help you better.

I am using the Backup and Restore utility included in Win 7.

I am doing an automatic backup on a daily basis of selected folders and a system image.

The backup is stored on a NAS drive.

I do not need to restore at the present time but I want to understand the utility for future reference.

I do not understand why I see only the last 3 months of backup sets when I go to 'Choose a different date' although there are backup sets on the storage drive going back over 18 months.

I hope this clarifies the issue.

Hi Brian

I have just had a look at my backup and Restore.  My backup is stored on my computer on a separate hard drive. I have backup sets going back to 2012. When I choose a different date I get the choices: last week, last month, last 6 months, last 12 months, an  all.

And if you choose 'all' do you see backup sets going back to 2012?

Yes, sorry.  It is the first time that I have tried it.  The problem could be that restore is not reading your NAS Drive!  PS: sorry that is obvious what I mean is that this is often the problem with backup and restore when some external drives are used.

Hi Brian,

First of all I would like to apologize for the delay in responding.

There are possibilities that this might be causing due to an issue with NAS drive. Or else you might have performed a disk cleanup before 2 months and this would have removed all the back up files that you took backup before 3 months. If you haven't tried Disk cleanup, then  we can confirm that the issue is caused due to NAS drive.

If this issue is caused due to NAS drive, then I would suggest you to post the same question in Microsoft TechNet forum for further assistance with this issue. We have a dedicated team to help you with type of issues.

I don't see how the NAS drive could be responsible as the 'Manage Space - View Backups' facility in the Backup and Restore utility can see ALL the backup sets back to the beginning of 2013.

These sets are also visible by direct inspection of folders on the drive.

I have, recently, successfully deleted sets for 2011 and 2012 to recover disc space and there is now plenty of space and the backup works every day as expected. But I can restore only for the last 3 months.
