Auto update won’t stay checked

After the most recent update to windows 10 last week neither my computer or the others I manage will allow the auto update option to stay selected. This is not a problem for my own system, as I keep it regularly updated, however for the others I manage it makes it difficult to keep up with updates. Is this a known issue?

Hi Paliv,

Windows Update components may have encountered issues after performing the last update. This could be related to an update that failed to install or system file corruption. I recommend that you download and run the Windows Update Troubleshooter, and then select Open or Save in the pop-up window. Then, select Next and follow the steps in the wizard to automatically find and fix problems with Windows Update.

If the issue persists, I recommend that you download the most recent Servicing Stack Update (SSU) for your system. Download the version of the latest SSU (KB4090914) that matches your version of Windows from the Microsoft Update Catalog, then restart your device and check for updates again.

Let me know how it goes.

Thank you. Neither fix worked. The troubleshooter said it repaired an update and that updates were pending and downloaded them, though the system showed as up to sate as of this morning. This resulted in no change after a restart. KB4090914 stated it could not install as it wasnt the correct file for my system. I double checked it was the proper x64 file, but the message persisted. The issue is still present, as soon as I try to toggle on “Automatically downlod updates”Automatically download updates, even over metered connections” the option turns itself back off. Maybe I am confused. Is this option only necessary for metered connections? Are these machines still receiving auto-updates since they are not set as having metered connections?

If the issue still persists, we suggest that you create a new user account with Administrator privileges and check if the issue is resolved. Refer to this support article for the steps on how to: Set up accounts.

The corrupted user profile does not function normally such as not launching Start menu, Cortana, Search bar, Store and other Windows applications. In such cases creating a new profile and checking for the same will help in identifying if the issue is specific to a corrupted user profile.

Keep us posted and we will be glad to assist you further.

Hi, Ferdz.  I have the same problem and had an identical experience as Paliv to your first set of instructions.  (I also have an x64 and current version of Windows 10.)

Per your second set of instructions, I created an additional admin account.  The new admin account was also unable to turn on the auto-update option.

(Inexplicably, running the Windows Update Troubleshooter fixed my Start menu from resetting its layout every time I restarted the computer.  I mention this in case it provides a new clue to the underlying cause.)

Please let us know your thoughts on next steps.  Thanks.

I also have the same problem on both of my windows 10 computers. A solution to this would be much appreciated. Thanks.

This setting may be disabled by an employer that has some administrative rights relating to my system's security and software settings.  Is there an easy way to check if it's disabled because of this?

For the record this is still an issue for me as well even with the new Administrator account. I thought I would update since this seems to be affecting others as well. I also sometime see the message that an administrator may have settings locked on two personally owned computers, even when logged in as an administrator.

I have exactly the same problem.   My current PC with Windows 10 is 9 months old and it updated automatically until a month or so ago.   Microsoft Technical Support have tried all of the above to no avail, except to mess up many of my settings.   All they can say it that they have never heard of the problem, which has been caused by a recent (unidentified) update and might be put right via a future one.   Hmmm....

Thank you all for your efforts. I used RESET THIS PC (KEEP MY FILES) on two desktops and a laptop in my parents house this weekend.  All somewhat older but all running Windows 10.  ALL 3 had the "auto update button won't stay checked" issue.  I can not solve it, now I have to leave and try to explain to them how to manually update their computers.  Come on Microsoft, you have an issue, please resolve it correctly, or at least acknowledge it and tell us you are working on it.
