Audio goes bad whenever I use the microphone

Hello, I have a problem with my microphone.

I recently just bought a pc, and went through the setup of windows and installing drivers. My headphone model name is the Sony WH-1000XM4 (wireless). Audio and everything is fine, however whenever I run a program that activates my microphone, the audio quality switches and sounds really bad. I have tried to disable the hands-free from the Bluetooth settings of my headphones, and it does fix the audio issue but then the program does not detect any microphones connected. Also, whenever re-enable the handsfree, the audio cuts out completely and I cant hear anything until I restart my computer.

An example of this, I launch discord and everything is fine until I go into the settings and turn on my microphone. The same problem happens whenever I load any other game, makes all audio sound bad, even if the game doesn't require a microphone to play. The bad audio only goes away when I disable handsfree, which also disables microphone.

I have tried to install the latest audio drivers, and have watched a lot of videos about this problem but nothing has worked so far. Since this is a new desktop pc that I built myself, I was wondering if it is a driver issue or something in settings that I have to change.

The path I used to disable handsfree: Settings> Bluetooth and devices> devices> more devices and printer settings> (right click) WH-1000XM4> properties> services> (uncheck) Hands-free Telephony> apply> okay.

Just similar concern, there is a problem with my audio whenever I connect my DualShock PS4 controller into one of the USB ports on the motherboard, all audio gets switched to the speakers on the controller. I would then have to plug in my headphone using audio jack to the controller, but I don't hear anything.

Thanks for your help, Billy.

Hi,
I'm Rodrigo and I'll help you.
Unfortunately, this issue is a limitation on how the Bluetooth headsets work. When the microphone is in use, the headset enters Hands-free mode, which has this lower audio quality to handle both audio input and output.

It is not possible to use the headset microphone and the Stereo mode (with good audio quality) simultaneously. Disabling the Hands-free Telephone in device settings will only prevent the headset from entering the Hands-free mode.

A workaround to this issue is using another microphone to communicate, so you can use the Bluetooth headset in Stereo mode.
If I helped you anyway, It makes me happy.

Thanks for your reply. Would you happen to know how to connect a controller to pc without the audio switching to the controller speaker? and would you know how to disable the handsfree so I wouldnt have to manually disable it whenever i turn on my pc?

You can always set the audio device after connecting the controller. Open the volume control on the taskbar, select the right arrow on the right of the volume bar, and select the output device. Or you can press the shortcut Windows + Ctrl + V and set the output device.

To avoid the controller being set as the default device when you connect it, after connecting the controller, go to Settings > System > Sound > More sounds settings > Right-click the audio output device > Set as default. After doing this a few times, it will stop setting the controller speaker as the default device when you connect it.
