Asus Win11 laptop media keys, camera, and speakers stopped working suddenly

Hi there,

I have a cluster of problems that have occurred simultaneously on my Asus Zenbook laptop running Windows 11. The issues are as follows:

  1. The inbuilt speakers have stopped working. Sound will still play through hardwired or bluetooth speakers or headphones.

  2. The media keys (controlling e.g. volume, brightness etc.) will no longer 'lock'. I previously had it set that I held 'fn' to use the regular function keys (f1-f12), but that without fn held the relevant keys would control brightness etc. Now it has revered to having to hold 'fn' to do the latter. You can supposedly cycle between these options by pressing fn+esc. When I try this I get an onscreen indication that the function is switching, but nothing changes.

  3. My touchscreen, which I had previously disabled, has re-enabled itself.

  4. Periodically, the light on the 'camera' function button (one of the fn buttons) will come on to indicate that the camera is switched off, pressing this button will (after a massive lag) cause the 'camera is off' indicator to appear onscreen but will never turn it on. Restarting the PC resolves this (but none of issues 1-3).

Any suggestions as to what might be going on here. My first guess is that maybe a windows update caused some kind of conflict with the mainboard firmware?

Hi Robert De Vries3.

Welcome to the Microsoft Community.

You are having problems with a lot of your laptop's hardware and you suspect that Windows Update is causing the problems. It's possible, there are some users on the forums stating that they are experiencing the first problem you mentioned after the update, while the others don't seem to be mentioned. But since they are happening at the same time, I think they are most likely the same cause and you can uninstall that update package and disable the update from appearing in the list using wushowhide.diagcab by doing the following.

1. Type setting in the search box on the taskbar and open Settings.

2. Go to System - Windows Update - Update History - Uninstall Updates Uninstall Updates.

3. In this screen, you can find the update that is causing the problem and uninstall it.

Restart your computer and if your hardware is normal at this point, then you can follow the steps below to hide Windows Update:

1. download wushowhide.diagcab using the following website:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/F/2/2/F22D5FDB-59CD-4275-8C95-1BE17BF70B21/wushowhide.diagcab

2. Open this program, click next and select hide updates.

3. Here you can find the updates that are causing the problem, check them and click next. Now the packages you have selected will not be pushed to you anymore.

If you have solved the problem in this way, we would like you to give feedback to the Microsoft developers about the problem you are experiencing.
