Applying Windows 10 Pro upgrade to a re-installed Windows 10 Home installation.

Several years ago, 2023, I purchased an upgrade to Windows from Home to Pro. I recently had to reinstall Windows 10 on my Computer due to a newly installed SSD upgrade. Upon installing using the USB that Windows 10 Home came with and supplying my original activation key it seems I am back on Windows 10 Home, which made perfect sense to me. I went back to Microsoft.com and logged into my account and navigated to my order history. I found my order for the upgrade to Pro but there was no listed product Key. speaking with the Store assistant is told me that if there was no product key then the purchase of the upgrade was linked digitally to my Microsoft account:

When you purchased the Windows 10 Pro upgrade through the Microsoft Store, a digital license was applied to your Microsoft account instead of providing an activation code. To activate Windows 10 Pro on your reinstalled system, follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to your device with the Microsoft account you used to purchase the upgrade.

  2. Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation.

  3. Under "Activation," select Troubleshoot if Windows isn't activated automatically.

  4. Use the I changed hardware on this device recently option within the troubleshooter, and follow the prompts to link your digital license.

For more details, you can refer to this page on finding your Windows product key or digital license.

I told it that the trouble shoot option and changed hardware option were not present.

Thank you for letting me know. If the "Troubleshoot" option is not visible, it may indicate that your system is not detecting the digital license associated with your Microsoft account. To resolve this, please ensure the following:

  1. Sign in with the Correct Microsoft Account: Verify that you are signed in with the same Microsoft account used to purchase the Windows 10 Pro upgrade. You can check this under Settings > Accounts > Your Info.

  2. Check Activation Status: Go to Settings > Update & Security > Activation. Confirm whether it says "Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account."

  3. Reinstall the Upgrade: If the digital license is not detected, you may need to reinstall the Windows 10 Pro upgrade. You can do this by:

    • Going to the Microsoft Store app on your device.

    • Searching for "Windows 10 Pro" and checking if it shows as already purchased.

    • Following the prompts to reinstall the upgrade.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, I can provide additional support options. Would you like me to assist further?

The issue here is I am signed in with the same account, the only Microsoft account I have. Also, it states Windows is Activated not Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account. When I navigate to the Microsoft Store app on my device and search for the Upgrade to Windows 10 pro it states I have to pay even though this account has already purchased it. There is an option to supply the product key if you already purchased it, but again, my order does not have one.

the AI assistant told me to call a phone number for further support, which I did. When I called and explained the issue it said to go online right back where I started.

I am looking for any potential solutions to get either A) Microsoft to send me an email with a product key for that purchase or B) reissue it to my account. but frankly, any input at all is appreciated.

Side thought, I purchased Home originally and upgraded to Pro. It feels like the product key I have should have been moved from the database table for Home keys to the table for Pro keys. IDK if this is how it works but that is what I feel like should have happened.

Answer
Hello,

The upgrade license is digital, and is not a full license, so it will not have an actual 25-digit key.

This is how you can get the new install to Pro and then transfer the upgrade license.

You can go to Settings > System > Activation > Change product key

Disconnect internet, and disable any third party antivirus, key in the generic key instead: VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T

That should get you to Pro. Once restarted, you can connect back to the internet, sign into your Microsoft account. See if it is activated.

=============

If it doesn't activate automatically, go to Settings > System > Activation, run the troubleshooter, choose the hardware change option. When it asks you where it is installed on right now, you should choose the old device name. Then click on Activate button. And on the next screen when it asks you where to transfer it to, choose your new device name. See if that does the trick.
