Applications changing to a different monitor when monitors close after idle

Hello,

I would like to report an issue that has been happening to me pretty much since Windows XP. Not sure if it was happening before in Windows 3.1/95/98.

I have a setup with two monitors. When the monitors close after idle, all applications are automatically going to my main monitor.

As a result, everytime I wake up the monitors, I have to manually switch all the apps back to the secondary monitor.

I would like to know if there is a way to keep the applications where they are?

Hi, I'm Robinson, and I’m happy to help you today.
I know how frustrating this may be for you but I'll do my very best to help you.

Usually, this problem is related to the graphic driver downloading, and installing the latest driver from the manufacturer may fix this problem.

If the problem persists even after the driver update you can try the workarounds in these links.

Hello Robinson,

Thank you for the quick reply!

I would like if possible to find a solution that does not require me to run a program and keep it up to date.

I have already tried the solution from the second link.

Regards,

Mathieu

This problem was fixed in Windows 11, but on Windows 10 there is no official solution for this problem until now. Microsoft launched a Windows 10 insider build with the fix for this problem and it may reach the official build soon.

Thank you Robinson. I will consider upgrading to Windows 11 then. I'm just not so sure if graphic drivers are stable enough for video games.

You can use the PC health check app to check if your computer meets the requirement of Windows 11.

You may get help on the graphic driver stability in your graphic card manufacturer forum, you will be able to talk to other users with the same graphic card and find out if there is any problem between the driver version and Windows 11. You can reach the AMD community and Nvidia Community at these links.
