Allocating more memory to specific proccesses.

Hi,

I have a 64 bit Intel i 5 laptop with 8Gb of RAM.

When I open the task manager I see that processes only use up to ~500 Mb of memory. How can I make  a specific process use more memory?

This limitation occurs always, regardless of what percentage of the memory is being used.

Care to be more specific?  We could also use a screen shot of task manager process tab sorted by memory (click the top of the memory tab)

Still unsure of the question.  The way memory works is that it only uses as much as it needs at any given moment.  If you were able to give it 10 times as much it would still only be able to use as much as it needs

Whats the underlying problem that you are trying to solve?

I am running some expensive calculations in Matlab. When I run the same algorithm with the same version of Matlab in other computers it is much faster.

The number of calculations is primarily dependent on the CPU and very little of it is memory.  Memory is just where the CPU stores the results.  IF Matlab runs faster on a different computer it is a different CPU.

YOu can see this in your task manager snip.  Matlab is using 30.9% of the cpu and only 449 Mb RAM.  If the cpu could run faster it would use more ram to store the results

Well I simply don't understand why when I run the exact same software in another computer (with windows 7 I should say) uses more CPU and more memory, and it works faster (Does the same calculations in a shorter amount of time). We know that the program can be faster, then why is not using more resources?

speed is measured in calculations per second and that is a function of the CPU.  I have tried to explain a couple of times.  I will not continue this debate.  I suggest you  run a benchmark on your computer and another on the computer you say is faster and give us the results.

There are far to many variables to do this any other way.  You have given us no details .

The same program in Matlab takes around 0.3 seconds to be completed in a computer with i7 core and 32 Gb of RAM. In my computer (i5 and 8 Gb) it takes  5.5 min. If you need any other specifications or details, please be more specific.
