All cursors discolored after windows update

After the latest windows update for Win10, all of my cursors are light grey where they should be black. All the other colors are fine and the typing cursor is black too, but even the default windows cursor is grey around the edge.

I have updated drivers, deleted unneeded drivers for old devices, changed color settings, changed mouse settings, changed cursor setting, changed theme settings, restarted computer....etc.

The ONLY thing that has helped after many hours of searching is turning ON the cursor trail setting regardless of length which has made all cursors display correctly albeit with a trail which I despise. Hovering over the check box for trail and clicking on and off literally changes the cursor from black/blue to light grey/blue.

please help

Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

We understand the difficulties that you are facing with the cursor color after Windows 10 update. We appreciate your effort in troubleshooting the issue. In order to get clarity and to assist you accordingly, please reply with the answers to the questions below.

  • What is the Windows 10 version and Build installed? (Type winver in Windows search/Run command)

  • What is the KB number of recent update that installed on the PC?

  • Have you installed any third party pointer modification program/software?

However, we would suggest you to try these methods and let us know the result of these methods.

Method 1: Change the default size of the mouse pointer

  1. Press Windows + I key from the keyboard to open Windows Settings.
  2. Then select Ease of Access. Click on Cursor & pointer from the left pane.
  3. Select the option from the right side under Change pointer color.
  4. Then restart the PC and check. If issue persists, then perform method 2.

Method 2: New user account

This issue may be due to a profile corruption. Hence, in order to eliminate possibilities, we would suggest you to create a new user account and check. Follow the steps from the article Create a local user or administrator account in Windows 10 to create a new user account.

We await your response.

Windows 10 version 1903 (OS Build 18362.267)

(KB4505903)

Yes I have a third party pointer mod, but I have had it for about a year and it has never caused an issue, immediately after this windows update all the cursors are grey.

I had already done Method 1, and I have now tried method 2, neither have worked, cursors are still grey in new pc account. Also, I had already uninstalled the windows update and reverted to previous build.....which didn't work (it was a 2 part update which I was NOT allowed to uninstall the security update portion) I suspect my issue lies with your security update.

edit: I also attempted to revert to a previous restore point, but apparently windows 10 default has this turned off which I had never checked before this problem because I assumed windows would by default have that turned on.

thanks for your time Aditya, I hope we can figure this out

Okay, for now I turned off the custom cursor because the trails are very annoying, but any of the default or recolored MS cursors are difficult to see in some lighting/colored situations...partly why I originally got a custom one.

But, now my programs have started to crash and freeze upon entry or exit! task manager won't load and most override functions don't respond, my only solution has been to force restart.....

no I don't have any malicious adware, spyware, viruses, or custom programs running in the background

What did you do to my computer Microsoft!?

I MANAGED TO FIX IT!

I went into NVIDIA GeForce Experience, downloaded the latest update/drivers, picked custom installation, and checked the clean install box.
I started installing, and after the screen turned black for a moment, the cursor was back to normal!

Hope this works for you too!
