Activate Windows Problem

Yesterday, and today, my pc started up with the message "Activate Windows - Go to settings to activate Windows".

The troubleshoot option gives an error code of 0xC004F012.

This pc was purchased from Quiet PC in Jannuary 2016, with a licenced copy of Windows already installed, and has not had any subsequent changes which might affect the licence.

Why has this happened, and how can I put things right?

Hi Mike

1
Was Windows ever reinstalled by a PC Repair Shop?

2
Open the Settings App, go to Update and Security - Activation, what is the exact
activation error reported on that page?

3
Click your Start Button, type cmd then right click Command Prompt and choose 'Run as Administrator'

Run or paste this command and hit Enter:

slmgr.vbs /dlv

Please post a screenshot of the resulting dialog . . .

When you upgraded your OS, did you install the newer OS from scratch?

Did the repair shop install the same OS on the PC from the scratch?

These two are biggest offenders when the question arises about the error you mentioned.

Hi Dave

Thank you for your prompt reply.

1. Windows has never been re-installed. The PC has never been repaired or left my home.

2. The activation error report is as follows - "We can't activate Windows on this device because you don't have a valid digital licence or product key. If you think you do have a valid licence or key, select Troubleshoot below. Error code 0x004F012."

The Troubleshoot result is - "We can't activate Windows on this device at the moment. You can try activating again later, or go to the store to buy genuine Windows. (0x0000022)" !!

Thanks

Mike

Hi Mike

Thank you for that information, it looks like this is caused by a Windows 10 update, your best option is to contact Microsoft Support and ask them to help you re-activate your Windows 10

Hi Dave

After a long wait, I spoke to someone at Microsft Support.

He told me to run slui 4 as administrator to obtain an Installation ID. When I did this, I just got a blue screen with constantly revolving dots, and no Installation ID.

If I do eventually get this, I have to call them back again.

Regards

Mike

After a fourth call to Microsoft Support, I was finally transferred successfully to a member of the Technical Team, named Arthur (cut off mid transfer twice).

Arthur has spent the whole afternoon remotely assisting in resolving my problem, which, as you suggested, was a problem with my Windows 10 installation, presumably caused by an update somehow. Arthur eventually re-installed Windows 10 for me, and I am now up and running normally.

Thanks Dave and Cjustin for your help.

Regards

Mike

Well, I´m glad for you, but disgusted with Microsoft Support.  This is obviously a wide-spread problem that the company should respond to. Not many people have ´whole afternoons´ to spend waiting for an answer.  I bought Windows 10 Home from the Microsoft website legally so that I wouldn´t have problems like this, with no one to turn to when the program didn´t work.  I am disgusted with Microsoft´s support team! If I could actually get hold of someone there, I would love to hear their excuse for this ridiculous waste of time!
