You will have to purchase the physical package.

Can I upgrade from a 32-bit version of Windows to a 64-bit version of Windows 8?

Yes, but you can't do this using Upgrade Assistant. If your PC has a 64-bit capable processor (CPU) but is currently running a 32-bit version of Windows, you can install a 64-bit version of Windows 8, but you'll need to buy Windows 8 as a DVD.

You also won't be able to keep any files, settings, or apps when you upgrade from a 32-bit to a 64-bit version.

Hi Andre,

I just upgraded from Windows XP 32-bit.  However, my system has a 64-bit capable processor (CPU).  I will have to get the DVD for the 64 bit version.

There's a link in my confirmation email to order a DVD:

"To always have the software as physical backup media at hand, order your personal backup DVD now."

Will this DVD be for the 64-bit version?
Thanks!

I have a 64 bit computer with a 32 bit version of windows vista. It was not at all clear that Windows 8 would only install a 32 bit version when I bought the download.
Why can't I just download and upgrade from a 64bit version of the download? Do I really now have to purchase the DVD to install the 64 bit version? This is terrible!

I TO UPGRADED  AND UNDER THE IMPRESSION THAT COULD UPGRADE FROM 32BIT VISTA TO 64BIT WIN8 PRO VIA DOWNLOADING 64BIT ISO. BUT NOTHING CAME UP TO ASK WHICH VERSION WANTED. THE ONE IT DOWNLOADED IS ONLY 32BIT, VERY ANNOYED AS AM A PENSIONER AND CANNOT AFFORD TO NOW BUY A DISK AS WELL. MICROSOFT COULD IHAVE A LINK FOR THE 64BIT ISO AS I HAVE NO OTHER COMPUTER AS SOME HAVE SUGGESTED USING TO GET IT. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE.

Wow. This is really unacceptable.  I also purchased and downloaded on release day in hopes of being able to upgrade to 64-bit as I was told I could do as long as I did a clean install.

I _was_ super upbeat about Windows 8 and tried to stay positive in the face of all the negativity from most people I know.  Perhaps they were right.  I am extremely disappointed.  There is no good reason to not allow us to pick which ISO if we want to do a clean install!  Any chance of getting a refund or a discounted upgrade?  Otherwise I will be disputing the charge with my credit card company.  I'm not buying two licenses for the same machine.

Get your act together!

All right: the windows webupgrade downloads both, it then autodetects what you have, and from there will install either 32-bit or 64-bit depending on your hardware. It does not matter what copy of windows you have, as long as you have a copy of windows.

So are you saying I can go throught the download/setup process from the 64machine that has 32bit on it(accidentaly install) and get the 64bit version that way?

It is possible, since the files for both are present in the websetup. The only documentation I can find on the matter says that the architecture and language selection is automatic. Which leaves much to be desired in knowing how the program makes the actual selection.

hope this helps others who did same as me. After reading that others could go to another computer with 7 64bit on were able to download the 64bit image from it.

i had upgraded to win8 - this is how i discovered it was 32bit via computer properties

i had a dvd of win7 64 bit  ultimate that was created from an iso download from microsoft some time ago. After booting into it following install steps chose fresh install and then selected the partion win8 was on.
I selected advance option at the bottom of this selection screen so could formatt the partition, this option probably not necessary, I just did not want the windows.old folder that it creates when installing were a operating system is already.

After format continued the installation when   It asked for serial for win7  i skipped that step as dont have a key. Win 7 64 bit installed all ok.

Once up I then used the setup link in email. It asked for my Win 8 serial. When got to asking how wanted to install chose media and downloaded the setup to computer. The disk I created is the 64bit version this time.

Yay not so stressed now.
