2020-06-11 - After Windows Update, printer not working

Hi

---------------------------------

The fix is in this post below

---------------------------------

My Windows 10 updated overnight and now my Brother printer is no longer printing.  Windows can "see" the printer, It knows when the printer is ideal. If I turn the printer off, Windows shows it as offline, when I turn it back on, it sees it again.

When I print something (tried PDF file, an image in Photoshop, and some simple text from notepad), it says it is printing. It goes to the Printer Que... everything seems to be working fine.... But the printer never prints.

I went to the Brother website, downloaded the latest drivers and firmware they have, installed all of that... Same issue.

When I run the Windows printer troubleshooter, it says no issue found.

I tried everything I can think of what I can find online.  The printer is being seen by Windows, just not getting the print job sent to it.

All of this started right after the latest Windows 10 Update.

And yes, I have rebooted my system multiple times, Unplugged everything and cold booted all hardware.

Need some help OR a fix from Microsoft if this is an issue in the latest update that was just sent out.

UPDATE and Solution:  2020-06-13

*************************

Thanks to everyone for the help and now the solution.

The problem is in the update KB4560960. Once I removed this and rebooted my printer started working again.

  1. 1) Press Win+I to open the Settings app.
  2. 2) Choose Update and Security.
  3. 3) Click the Update History link.
  4. 4) Click the Uninstall Updates link. ...
  5. 5) Choose the update you want to undo. ...
  6. 6) Click the Uninstall button that appears on the toolbar.

In step 5 above, I had to search a bit and then found the update in the Microsoft area. For me it had the install date of 2020-06-11, but the real key is the "KB4560960". Once I removed that, rebooted, my printer was back up and running.

Have you reinstalled the printer with its software?

Hi lacrumb

Yes I did. I removed the drives and the printer from my system. Disconnected the printer and rebooted. Made sure I have nothing left. Rebooted again and reinstalled everything.

Same issue.

Windows can see the printer, says it is printing to if, but nothing gets printed.

I changed USB ports, even changed the USB cable... Nothing works.

Hi

I said above that I downloaded all the latest drivers and firmware for the printer and reinstalled them.

Everything was working fine right up to the latest Windows update about 24 hours ago.

Hi Zorg. I'm Greg, an installation specialist, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, and Volunteer Moderator, here to help you.

1) See if you can System Restore to a point before the problem began following this guide: https://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-system-r...

If the problem repeats then check which Windows Updates were installed at Settings > Update & Security > Windows Updates > Update History, uninstall them there or System Restore again, then immediately check for and block the Updates with the Hide Updates tool explained here: https://www.howtogeek.com/223864/how-to-uninsta...

2) If that doesn't work then I would Clean Install the printer which always works, lasts longer and actually saves time. Windows still needs the full feature software to properly run all the features of a printer/scanner, the new apps are not mature enough to be fully reliable. Follow these steps:

1) Power up the printer, if wired unplug it's USB cable from PC.

2) Go to Settings>Apps>Apps and Features to find and Uninstall any printer software.

3) Use one of these methods to remove all of the old printer drivers:
https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/101274-unin...
https://helpdeskgeek.com/how-to/remove-uninstal...

4) Now type Control Panel in Start Search, open CP, choose Icon View. In Control Panel open Devices and Printers, right click printer to delete Printer and any scanner or fax of the same name. Restart PC.

5) Go to the printer model’s Support Downloads webpage to download and install the latest full software package. Now is also the time to check for any newer printer firmware to install which matters a lot.

6) Extract Printer software, right click Setup file to Run as Administrator. Follow the setup screens closely as you install the software. For USB it should prompt when to plug in the printer.

Older software may need to be installed in Compatibility Mode to run correctly:
https://www.windowscentral.com/how-install-non-...
https://www.windowscentral.com/how-install-olde...

If you have further problems reply back with results of each step.

Once it's installed and you've run a test print, then scanned it to see that it opens on the desktop, open the Printer software and go into its Settings to set the scan-to file location you prefer, also the email app you want opened for Scan to Email, if applicable.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. If you will wait to rate my post until we are done, I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

I found this after troubleshooting a customer's Brother MFC 5490CN connected by USB.

https://www.tenforums.com/drivers-hardware/158206-printer-doesnt-work-anymore-after-last-windows-update.html

Scanning works, but printing fails and reports and application error ID 1000

Faulting application name: PrintIsolationHost.exe

Faulting module name: gdi32full.dll

Looks like WU KB4560960 is a likely culprit. Awaiting solution!

It is a problem with the last windows update. I removed update KB4560960, restarted my pc and my printer started working again. I'll wait to do anymore updates until Microsoft has a fix.

Dave & Lyn,

Thank you sooooo much. I was having the same issue Zorg had and I tried all the things that was suggested online and on 'Brothers' page and other Microsoft pages. I am not joking but I spent around 7 hours trying everything I could to completely remove printer and fresh install and rebooting many times etc. Thankfully, I woke up this morning and this page is here and all I had to do was uninstall that specific update. My printer is now working fine and I am with you Dave & Lyn, I will not be installing any updates until I make sure these issues are fixed.

By this time, 6/12/2020 you have probably read that the Microsoft Update has caused this problem.

Uninstall the latest patches. After that, if you CAN any longer, pause updates for 7 days until Microsoft gets their act together. Well, that will never happen but hopefully a fix will be done within a week.

Read this.
